Farallon Islands Fish and Wildlife Service A National Wildlife Refuge encompassing a group of islands 28 miles west of the coast of mainland San Francisco. Protected since 1909, it is today a large sea bird breeding ground.

Recreation Area
various sites in San Francisco, Marin and San Mateo Counties National Park Service A National Recreation Area that encompasses a regional collection parks, beaches, open spaces and historic sites in the San Francisco Bay Area. New sites have continually been added since its creation in 1972.

Alcatraz San Francisco Bay Part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area An island in the bay established as a military reservation in 1850. Later a federal maximum security penitentiary until 1963. Currently a principal San Francisco tourist attraction.

China Beach Sea Cliff Part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area A small cove adjacent to high cliffs with views of the Golden Gate Bridge and surrounding luxury homes. Picnic tables and a bathhouse are available.

Fort Funston Southwest coast of San Francisco Part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area A former army fort, coastal battery and Nike missile site on coastal bluffs overlooking sand dunes and the Pacific Ocean. Currently a recreational site for hang-gliding and off-leash dog walking.

Fort Mason Marina District Part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Managed by the Fort Mason Center. A former army fort that served as Port of Embarkation in World Was II. Currently houses exhibition space and offices for many non-profits.

Fort Miley (partially) Outer Richmond Part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Hospital run by Veterans Health Administration. A former coastal defense that was converted into a Veterans Hospital. Lands surrounding the VA Hospital are used for recreation.

Lands End Outer Richmond Part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area Coastal bluffs hugging the northwest shoreline of San Francisco at the entrance to the Golden Gate. Contains popular hiking trails that connect Sutro Baths with Lincoln Park.

Ocean Beach Western shoreline Part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area A 3-mile long stretch of beach running along the Pacific shoreline of San Francisco. The Great Highway sits atop a raised berm that protects the Richmond and Sunset District from encroachment by sand dunes. Today, Ocean Beach is a popular site for surfing and bonfires.
