National Treasure 3 is an upcoming 2016 film and is the third installment of the National Treasure franchise film from Walt Disney Pictures. It will be directed by Jon Turteltaub[4] and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. [5]

Cast[edit]

Harvey Keitel, who appeared in the previous two films, has not yet been confirmed to appear in the third film.

Plot[edit]

Although there has been speculation as to the ending of National Treasure: Book of Secrets with the question about page 47 of the President's book of secrets being the plot for a third film, Turteltaub responded in a press interview that the idea was not set in stone as the basis for National Treasure 3.[11] In an interview in May 2010, Jon Voight noted that he wants to know what is on page 47, although still unaware of the contents of the script.[10]

Steve Weintraub interviewed writers Doug Miro and Carol Bernard in May 2010, and they said that when they began working on the script, they were told to "start with Page 47."[12]

Production[edit]

In December 2007, before the second film was released, Nicholas Cage showed interest in doing a third film, believing it should be more international.[13] In early 2008, Disney registered the domains for NationalTreasure3DVD.com and NationalTreasure4DVD.com.[14] In May 2008, Director Jon Turteltaub said that the filmmaking team will take its time on another National Treasure sequel.[15] In September 2008, Jerry Bruckheimer officially confirmed that they were in the process of developing a third film. [16] In November 2008, Bruckheimer said that the writers were in the process of writing the script to the film.[17] In March 2009, Jon Voight, who plays Patrick Gates, says that the script was not yet finished, and that he "[hopes] there's good stuff for [him] to play in it, that Helen (Mirren, who plays Emily Appleton) will be back."[18] In April of 2010, it was announced that Disney planned to begin filming in the fall of 2010.[6]

In May 2010, Comingsoon.net interviewed director Jon Turteltaub regarding the film. He assures that Cage's involvement in Ghost Rider 2 would not hinder the making of the film, and that filming will begin in the fall or winter of 2010. Turtletaub did not reveal any plot details.[19] Also, producer Jerry Bruckheimer briefly talked to Access Hollywood, where he said that the first draft of the screenplay was completed.[19] Steve Weintraub interviewed writers Carlo Bernard and Doug Miro on the film. They told Weintraub that they had a draft of the script, and were awaiting feedback. [12] In July 2010, Turteltaub said that he plans to read the completed script the following month. [20] Despite previous plans to begin filming in late 2010, in February 2011, it was announced that filming for National Treasure 3 would begin in April 2011, after Nicolas Cage was finished working on Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.[21] In March 2011, it was revealed that Brian Koppelman and David Levien took over the script from Bernard and Miro.[2]

On January 26, 2012, Nicolas Cage was interviewed at Empire Online. Regarding the status of the film, Cage said he was still interested in doing a third film, saying "I would, but I have not heard any news about a third one at this time, and it would be interesting to take National Treasure into South America."[22] In April 2012, the film was reported to be still in the works.[23][24][25] In July 2012, it was reported that Diane Kruger was "getting ready to promote her upcoming movies The Host, due out next year and National Treasure 3 which is rumored for release in 2014." [9] By November 2012, the production on the film had not yet to begin.[26] A March 2013 article mentioned that Bruckheimer was producing the film, but there have been very little details.[5]

In April of 2013, Bruckheimer was interviewed by Collider.com at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. When asked about the status of National Treasure 3, Bruckheimer said that a team of writers was working on the script.[27] In a May 2013 interview, Justin Bartha mentioned that National Treasure 3 was still a possibility.[28] In August of 2013, Bruckheimer confirmed that the script to the film was still in the works.[29] He said, "We are working on it. It's still active. We're working on a script right now."[29]

In an October 2013 interview with Collider, Turtletaub estimated that the film would be shot "within two years." In regards to progress, he said "We’re closer. I’d say we’re about half-way there. It’s not only writing a great historical mystery, but we’ve gotta write something that has nothing to do with anything we’ve done before. The goal is to always have an original sequel, as silly as that sounds. We really want to make sure that the third one doesn’t just feel like a repeat of the first one, or one too many."[30] In April 2014, in an interview with Collider at WonderCon, Bruckheimer confirmed that the first act of the script was complete, commenting "those are the hardest movies to make ‘cause they’re all based on clues. It’s so difficult to work them out. But, we got a first act in [on Friday], and Jon [Turteltaub] was very excited about it and I’m very excited about it. Hopefully, the first act will lead into the second act and the third act, and we’ll get this thing going."[31] In August 2014, Bruckheimer reported that the third National Treasure film was in the works while at a book signing.[32]

In September 2017, Bruckheimer revealed that the script was already finished, but Disney was not satisfied with the story.[33]
