Eric Munro Agnew (26 April 1887 - 27 February 1951) was a Scottish painter.[1] He also authored a book on ballet.[2]
Life[edit]
His father was Rev. William Agnew (born c. 1853) from Edinburgh.[3]
His mother was Annie Munro Alexander (born c. 1857) also from Edinburgh. They married in 1881 in Newington, Edinburgh.[4]
Eric Munro Agnew was born on 26 April 1887 at the Gallatown Free Church manse; Gallatown is a suburb of Kirkcaldy. He had a brother George Agnew (born c. 1883).[5]
He joined the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders for the First World War, winning the Military Cross. From the Dundee Courier of Tuesday 14 January 1919:[6]
Lieut (acting Capt.) Eric Munro Agnew, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, Special Reserve, attached 1st Battalion (Salonika). In a raid on the enemy lines, though suffering from fever, he took command of the assaulting columns of his company, and with great skill and coolness under heavy fire, guided them over 1000 yards of difficult country to a gap in the enemy's wire, and then dashingly led the assault on the enemy trenches.
He married Laura Emma Elizabeth Jenner Wilson (9 February 1901 - 14 May 1999) from Sydney, Australia - on 11 June 1927 in West Brompton in London. Laura was a ballet dancer. She joined the Ballets Russes in 1918 under Serge Diaghilev. She later became a ballet teacher.[7]
Art[edit]
He attended the Glasgow School of Art from 1907 to 1911.[8] He was awarded his diploma in 1911.[9] He also studied at Slade School of Art in London.[10]
Death[edit]
He died on 27 February 1951. He was at home at 43 Broadhurst Gardens in London.[11]
The Scotsman reported his death:[12]
MR ERIC M. AGNEW DEAD Portrait and Landscape Painter | The death has occurred in London of Mr Eric Munro Agnew, portrait and landscape painter. Aged 63. Mr Agnew was born in Kirkcaldy, younger son of the late Rev. William and Mrs Agnew. He studied architecture and later art at Glasgow School of Art, and then at the Slade School of Art in London. He was a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy Exhibitions between 1924 and 1939. Mr Agnew served in both world wars in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. In the 1914-18 war he reached the rank of Captain and won the Military Cross. In World War Il he served as a staff officer from 1940 to 1945, attaining the rank of Major.
His estate was valued at £2289, 15 shillings and 2 pence.[13]
Works[edit]
His Still Life[14] and Bulrushes, Red Berries And African Figure[15] have both been to auction.
Combining his wife's love of ballet with his art, he wrote and illustrated the book Anatomical Studies for Dancers and Teachers of the Classical Ballet in 1949.[16]
