James Bayne (1843 - 17 June 1921) was a Scottish painter.[1]
Life[edit]
His father was James Bayne Snr. (18 April 1804 - 29 July 1893) from Muthill, Perthshire. He became a restauranteur and a dealer in wines and spirits.[2]
His mother was Margaret Wilson (born c. 1811) from Burntisland, Fife.
James Bayne was born in 1843 in Edinburgh.
He married Mary Elizabeth McCaw (born c. 1849) in August 1870.

He died in Newington, Edinburgh in June 1921.[3]
The newspaper The Scotsman of Saturday 18 June 1921 had this obituary:[4]
The Late Mr. James Bavne, Miniature Painter. - The death has taken place in Edinburgh of Mr James Bayne, who for many years has been well-known amongst Edinburgh artists and others, as a miniature painter. Amongst his patrons was Her Majesty Queen Alexandra, who purchased three oi his ivories at various dates. Mr. Bayne was the son of Mr. James Bayne, a restaurateur from Hanover Street, and was born in Edinburgh in 1843. He served a seven year art apprenticeship with J. O. Brown, from whom he derived a love of architectural subjects and a capacity for minute draughtsmanship (with both brush and pen) which developing in the pre-Raphaelite atmosphere of his youth, found scope in many directions - in watercolour painting (chiefly landscape), chromolithography, and book illustration. He illustrated Hart and Barbour's text-book on gynaecology, works on the throat by Dr Logan Turner, and other medical publications. He found his true sphere eventually in miniature-painting, to which art ha devoted the last twenty years of his life. He was a lover of his city, and a series of articles from his pen on Edinburgh Sixty Years Ago appeared in the Weekly Scotsman and brought him letters of appreciation from natives of Edinburgh in many parts of the world. Last August he celebrated his golden wedding .
The Fife Free Press, & Kirkcaldy Guardian of Saturday 25 June 1921 had this obituary:[5]
DEATH of an artist.— Many in the district will regret to learn of the death of James Bayne, a well-known artist, who resided many years in Craigkennochie Terrace before removing some time ago to Edinburgh, his native town. For the past twenty years Mr. Bayne devoted himself to miniature painting.
