James Torrington Bell (23 October 1892 - 14 May 1970) was a Scottish painter;[1]

Life

His father was James Bell [Snr.] (c. 1857 - 9 January 1935) from Scoonie in Fife. He was a bank accountant.

His mother was Margaret Marshall (8 February 1858 - 22 May 1936) also from Scoonie. James Snr and Margaret married on 8 October 1885 in Edinburgh.

James Torrington Bell was born on 23 October 1892 in Marine Cottage, Leven in Fife.

He married Gertrude Winifred Thorburn (18 July 1900 - 1979) on 3 September 1929 in Edinburgh.

Like his father, James became a banker but he was much more known as an artist.[2]

He died on 14 May 1970 in Maryfield Hospital in Dundee. His usual residence was Woodlands, Westpath, Carnoustie.

From the Aberdeen Press and Journal of Friday 15 May 1970:[3]

Leading artist dies in Dundee. Scottish artist Mr J. Torrington Bell (72) [sic]. Woodlands, Westpark, Carnoustie, died yesterday in Maryfield Hospital, Dundee. Born in Leven, Fife, he was in charge of the National Bank Scotland branch at Carnoustie for 30 years until his retirement In 1957. He was best known as an artist and exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Scottish Academy. He also painted the picture that was the gift of Angus county to the Queen the occasion of her marriage. He is survived his wife and two daughters.
