Margaret Holmes Bowman (12 June 1859 - 13 January 1932) was a Scottish painter.[1]

Life[edit]

Her father was Alexander Douglas Bowman (1831 - 24 November 1901) from Tibbermore in Perthshire.

Her mother was Isabella Farquharson Bowman (26 June 1829 - December 1880) from the Gorbals in Glasgow. They married in Tradeston, Glasgow on 22 July 1858.

Margaret Holmes Bowman was born on 12 June 1859 in Tradeston, Glasgow.

By the 1890s she had moved to Carigdarroch in Skelmorlie, Ayrshire.

Towards the end of her life she was moving between 5 Waterlow Court, Heath Close, Golders Green, London; and her home in Skelmorlie.

She died in London on 13 January 1932. The value of her estate was given as £584, 10 shillings and 1 penny.

From the Hendon & Finchley Times of Friday 22 January 1932:[2]

Death of Miss M. H. Bowman. — The funeral took place at the Golders Green Crematorium, on Friday, following a service in St. Alban’s Church, Golders Green, conducted by the Rev. H. Trundle, of Miss Margaret H. Bowman, a well-known portrait and miniature painter, who died at her home, 5 Waterlow Court, Garden Suburb, the previous Wednesday.

Her brother John James Bowman was staying in Alderney in the Channel Islands at the time of her death. She is buried alongside him at St. Anne's Churchyard in Guernsey.[3]
