The Academy of St. Luke was an independent art school in Edinburgh, Scotland, providing tertiary education in art and design. The Academy was founded in 1729 by the Scottish poet Allan Ramsay.[1]

History[edit]

Allan Ramsay, poet and impresario, founded the Academy of St. Luke in Edinburgh. He was a patron, as was the judge Lord Minto.[2] Its premises were rented from the University of Edinburgh.[3]

The treasurer of the Academy was the engraver Richard Cooper, a friend of the poet Allan Ramsay.[4][5]

The Academy ran for three years between 1729 and 1731.[6]

His son Allan Ramsay became an early alumni of the academy.[7][8][9] A sketchbook of 29 pages containing prints and drawings of Ramsay while at the Academy from 1730 to 1731 are held by the Scottish National Galleries.[10]
