George Fotherley Hargitt (11 November 1837 - 5 September 1926) was a Scottish painter.[1][2]

Life

His father was the composer Charles John Hargitt (1805 - 2 July 1880) from Edinburgh.

His mother was Mary Bagley (c. 1811) from Pocklington in Yorkshire, England. Charles and Mary married in Edinburgh on 18 March 1831.

George Fotherley Hargitt was born on 11 November 1837 in Edinburgh. His brother was the artist and ornithologist Edward Hargitt (3 May 1835 – 19 March 1895).

He had two wives and multiple children. Both of the marriages were in Edinburgh: the first to Marianne Frances O' Neill (1839 - 1884) from Ramsgate in Kent, England; the second to Dannetta Antoinette Verchere (2 April 1864 - 1957) from Bannu in Pakistan.
