Robert Duddingstone Herdman (14 June 1863 - 9 June 1922) was a Scottish painter.[1][2]

Life

His father was the artist Robert Inerarity Herdman (17 September 1829 – 10 January 1888) from Rattray in Perthshire.

His mother was Emma Kate Abbot (23 November 1835 - 10 December 1890) from Portlaoise, then called Maryborough, in Leinster, Ireland. Robert and Emma married on 17 September 1857 in Edinburgh.

Robert Duddingstone Herdman was born on 14 June 1863 in Edinburgh. His elder brother William Abbot Herdman (5 September 1858 – 21 July 1924) became a noted oceanographer and marine biologist; and was the secretary of the Challenger expedition.

Robert married Edna Norman (c. 1875 - 25 November 1915) on 28 February 1896 in Edinburgh.

He died on 9 June 1922 at St. Bernard's Tower, 13 Bruntsfield Crescent, Edinburgh. The value of his estate was £2812, 19 shillings and 7 pence.[3]
