Janet Johnston (8 September 1830 - 12 June 1905) was a Scottish painter.[1][2]

Life

Her father was James Johnston (c. 1771 - 18 September 1857), a tobacco manufacturer from Lasswade. He employed 6 men and 20 boys to do this.

Her mother was Helen Scott (c. 1792 - 31 October 1856) from Bo'ness, West Lothian. James and Helen married on 22 February 1825 in Bo'ness. They had 8 children.

Janet Johnston was born on 8 September 1830 in Edinburgh. She was well off because of her father's business and throughout the census reports was an annuitant or living on private means.

She died on 12 June 1905 in Colinton, Edinburgh.[6] She is buried in New Calton cemetery.[7]
