William Miles Johnston (7 April 1893 - 5 May 1974) was a Scottish painter.[1][2]

Life

His father was John Moffat Johnston (19 June 1852 - 28 December 1918), a chemist from Glasgow.

His mother was Margaret Park Boyd (3 September 1854 - 26 June 1924) from Braehead, Renfrewshire. John and Margaret married in 1881 in Partick, Glasgow.

William Patrick Miles Johnston was born in Mid Calder, West Lothian in 1893.

He married Dorothy Nesbitt (1893 - 1974) from Musselburgh. William and Dorothy married on 28 March 1921 in Newington, Edinburgh.

They had a son Antony Miles Johnston on 30 June 1922 at 48 Lauriston Place, Edinburgh.[3] They had 2 daughters Cecile and Patricia.

The family moved to Kirkcudbright in 1940.[4]

The cartoonist Ronald Searle was billeted with the family in the Second World War. The exploits of Cecile and Patricia at school led Searle to write 'The Belles of St. Trinians'.[5]

Death

He died on 5 May 1974 at Kirkcudbright in a fishing accident. He was buried on 9 May 1974 in Edinburgh.
