John Kennedy (c. 1833 - 27 February 1904) was a Scottish painter.[1][2]

Life[edit]

His father was Patrick Kennedy (1801 - 28 March 1873), a bookseller, originally from Kilmyshal, near Bunclody, Co. Wexford in Ireland. He became known as a folklorist. For a time in the 1830s he became an art teacher before opening a bookshop on Anglesea Street in Dublin.[3]

His mother was Maria Kelly as per John's marriage certificate. (On John's death certificate mistakenly stated that his mother's maiden name was Scully.) Patrick and Maria married in October 1832.[4]

John Kennedy was born c. 1833 in Dublin, Ireland. He was one of Patrick and Maria's six children.[5]

He married Margaret Mill Hughes (9 January 1832 - 13 May 1901) from Dundee. Margaret was the daughter of James Anderson Hughes, a builder, and Helen Mitchell White.

John and Margaret married on 25 July 1857 at Meadow Place, Dundee. On their marriage both were staying at Bell Street in Dundee.[6][7][8]

He was noted as the Master of the Government School of Design in Dundee.[14]

He then became the Art Master at Dundee High School.[15]

Death[edit]

He died on 27 February 1904 at his home at 372 Perth Road, Dundee, aged 71.[17]

After his death, his house at 372 Perth Road, went on sale in March 1904. The advert stated that it was erected by John Kennedy.[18]

His will was worth £14,176, 11 shillings and 10 pence on his death in 1904.[19]

His estate left slightly less: £13, 377, 7 shillings and 10 pence.[20]
