Nicol Laidlaw (4 February 1886 - 18 November 1929) was a Scottish painter and etcher.[1][2]

Life

[edit]

His father was James Carruthers Laidlaw (born 1854), a clerk and commercial traveller and sometime public house keeper in Bathgate, originally from Carluke.[3]

His mother was Mary Sinclair Blance (born 12 May 1861), daughter of Peter James Blance from Skeld, Sandstring in the Shetland Islands. They married on 6 March 1879 in Hawick.

They had a daughter Eliza Blance Laidlaw in 1879. The marriage seemed to be volatile and it hit the headlines when they had separated and the case went to court over a custody battle over Eliza. James Carruthers Laidlaw and his brother William Carruthers Laidlaw were accused of assault; William assaulting Mary Sinclair Blance when taking custody of Eliza, and James accused of assault when Mary's father Peter James Blance went round to James Carruthers Laidlaw to take the child back.[4]

The couple somehow reconciled and Nicol Laidlaw was born on 4 February 1886 in Leith, Edinburgh.
