Margaret Fletcher (26 February 1873 - 26 March 1946) was a Scottish painter.[1][2] She was the granddaughter of Angus Fletcher of Dunans, the 12th chief of the clan Fletcher.
Life
[edit]Her father was Bernard James Cuddon (1846 - 28 July 1934) from New Catton, Norwich in England. On marriage he took his wife's name and was known as Bernard James Cuddon Fletcher.
Her mother was Harriet Fletcher (c. 1847 - 21 June 1889) from Edinburgh. She was the daughter of Angus Fletcher, the 12th clan chief of Fletcher. The Dunans Castle and estate in Argyll were a Fletcher possession from the 18th century. Bernard and Harriet married on 6 April 1869 in Edinburgh.[3]
Margaret Cuddon Fletcher was born at Somerton Hall, Norfolk on 26 February 1873.[4][5] She was Bernard and Harriet's second daughter.[6] Their first daughter was born in 1871.[7] Brought up in Argyll, Margaret was known as Margaret Fletcher of Dunans.
She married William Leadbitter (18 November 1871 - 13 November 1910) of Garswood house in Lancashire.[8] They married in Edinburgh on 19 October 1905.[9] He was the eldest son of Colonel Leadbitter-Smith of Flass Hall near Durham. William Leadbitter, unusually for his family, did not use the Smith part of his name.[10]
Margaret thus became Margaret Fletcher Leadbitter.
Art
[edit]Among her wedding presents, was the book 'Women painters of the world' given by Ina McNeill. The couple honeymooned in Venice and travelled south in Italy.[11]
Death
[edit]She died of natural causes at her home in Queens Road, Harrogate on 26 March 1946.[12]
