John Inglis McClymont (27 August 1858 - 22 December 1934) was a Scottish painter.[1][2]

Life

His father was James McClymont (1823 - 8 May 1880), a farmer from Borgue in Kirkcudbrightshire.

His mother was Margaret Symington (22 December 1834 - 11 June 1916) from Paisley. James and Margaret married on 11 August 1857 in Glasgow.

John Inglis McClymont was born on 27 August 1858 in Manchester, England.[3]

Only John and his younger sister Lilias were born in Manchester, the rest of their family was born in Borgue, Kirkcudbright in Scotland. Both John and his sister Lilias were brought up in Kirkcudbrightshire.

John travelled to Colorado Springs in the United States in 1905. He opened up a studio in the Hagerman Studio. He billed himself 'a celebrated artist of the Scottish School' and gave lectures on the Scottish School of Painting.

His name hit the headlines when the Italians felt offence at their flag being missed off a portrait. McClymont offered to paint in the Italian flag in the portrait in Denver and resolved the situation.

He got American citizenship in the Autumn of 1920.

Death

He died in Colorado Springs on 22 December 1934.
