Helen Law (15 April 1859 - 28 August 1945) was a Scottish painter.[1] She was born Helen Urie Henderson, before marrying Thomas Law, a shipowner. She used the Law name for her artwork. She later married Edward Arthur Walton to become Helen Walton.

Life[edit]

Her father was James Henderson (29 March 1833 - 13 July 1893) from Paisley, a newspaper editor.

Her mother was Jemima Smeal (11 September 1832 - 19 November 1908) from Glasgow. They married on 12 June 1856 in Glasgow.

Helen Urie Henderson was born on 15 April 1859 in Paisley.

She married twice.[2]

She married Thomas Law, a shipowner, in Blackfriars, Glasgow in 1881.[3][4] [5] [6] [7] [8]

She married Edward Arthur Walton on 4 June 1890.[9] After marriage to Edward she gave up her painting career.

Art[edit]

She became an artist's model. James McNeill Whistler called her 'butterfly'.

She exhibited the work Sylvia at the RGI in 1889.[10]

Death[edit]

She died on 28 August 1945 in Edinburgh.[11]
