The ScaleWings sw51 Mustang, is an Austrian ultralight and light-sport aircraft designed by ScaleWings of Strasswalchen, Austria and is produced by ScaleWings in its own production faciltiy in Krosno / Poland. It was introduced into the market at the AERO Friedrichshafen show in 2013. The first flight took place on the 26th of September 2014.
The sw51 Mustang is a to scale (1.1.43 = 70%) replica of the North American P-51 Mustang most famous fighter aircraft of the Second World War.
Design and development[edit]
The sw51 Mustang features a cantilever low-wing, a two-seats in tandem enclosed cockpit under a bubble canopy, fixed or retractable conventional landing gear and a single engine in tractor configuration.[1][2][3]
The sw51 Mustang is made from carbon fibre. Its 7.900 m (25.9 ft) span wing mounts flaps. The sw51 Mustang homebuilt kit is designed for engines up to 600 hp (447 kW) and the ultralight / S-LSA version for engines up to 250 hp (186 kW). The standard engines used are the 100 hp (75 kW) Rotax 912S or 912iS and the turbocharged 135 hp (101 kW) Rotax 915 for the ultralight / S-LSA version and the 150 hp (112 kW) ULPower UL390iS and 5,500 hp (4,101 kW) ChevyLS9 powerplant. The Mustang features electrically retractable landing gear, hydraulic disc brakes on the main wheels, dual controls and electrically-operated flaps. The manufacturer has made the aircraft as similar to the original as possible, down to the simulated metal finish, rivets and other details. The SW51 also includes a sound system that provides a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine sound and a smoke generator for start-up smoke simulation.[4][1][2][3]</ref>
Weights The aircraft has a typical empty weight of 400 kg (880 lb) and a gross weight of 1,000 kg (2,200 lb) for the kit version with the UL-Power UL390iS, giving a useful load from 600 kg (1,300 lb). With full fuel of 110 litres (24 imp gal; 29 US gal) the payload for pilot, passenger and baggage is 520 kg (1,150 lb).[5]
Variants[edit]
The sw51 Mustang is supplied in three versions: as a homebuilt kit (1000 kg / 2205 lb MTOW) and as a ready-to-fly-aircraft (600 kg / 1323 lb MTOW) in two versions: ultralight and S-LSA. The S-LSA version for the US market will have a fixed landing gear and a fixed pitch propeller as required by legislation.
