Position of advocacy (policy draft)[edit]

  • Do you contribute to Wikipedia with a goal to promote or oppose a particular cause, individual, organization, or movement (other than furthering the goals of Wikipedia itself)?
    1. If yes, you have a position of advocacy and the following restrictions and follow-up question apply to you:
      • Restrictions: You must not edit articles in furtherance of your position of advocacy. You may edit articles for other reasons (uncontroversial changes such as style or typo changes, or edits in topics unrelated to your agenda) but must be above reproach and willing to endure extra scrutiny for your edits. You may use established Wikipedia processes (e.g., WP:Articles for creation, {{editrequest}}, WP:Articles for deletion) to propose content changes related to the topic(s) of your advocacy, but the outcome of those proposals is up to non-advocate editors. You may contribute at talk pages and non-content areas, but do not misuse them as a forum for your views (see WP:SOAPBOX).
      • Follow-up Question: Do you receive compensation or other direct material benefits for your contributions?
        1. If yes: You must conspicuously disclose that you are paid to advocate a certain position, and the cause(s), individual(s) or organization(s) on whose behalf you are being paid.
        2. If no: Disclosure is not required but is considered a gesture of goodwill and respect for other editors.
    2. If no: Edit freely, following established Wikipedia policies.

Enforcement[edit]

  • In the absence of strong evidence to the contrary, an editor who does not disclose a position of advocacy should be assumed not to have one.
  • Conformance to the restrictions above is on the honor system; if that honor is found to have been breached then the offender is highly likely to face sanctions.
