RANGES AND MOUNTAINS NAVBOX UPGRADE??

[edit]

This template's initial visibility currently defaults to autocollapse, meaning that if there is another collapsible item on the page (a navbox, sidebar, or table with the collapsible attribute), it is hidden apart from its title bar; if not, it is fully visible.

To change this template's initial visibility, the |state= parameter may be used:

  • {{AlaskanGrass|state=collapsed}} will show the template collapsed, i.e. hidden apart from its title bar.
  • {{AlaskanGrass|state=expanded}} will show the template expanded, i.e. fully visible.

  • J rise to the Wickham Heights on this island and on

West Falkland to a range known as Byron Heights. A third range, known as the Hornby Mountains, also on West Falkland, runs parallel with the Falkland Sound, almost at right angles to the former two ranges. Elevations have a general summit level of 457-609m ( 1.500-2, 000ft), the highest elevation being Mount I'sborne in the Wickham Heights, Fast Falkland, rising to a height of 705m (2,312ft). Mount Adam on West Falkland is the second highest elevation, reaching 700m (2,297ft). Although there is no evidence to suppose that the Falkland Islands supported permanent glaciers, those mountains of the archipelago which rise over 609m (2,000ft) show evidence of localised glaciation. The broad, dome-shaped form of Mount Usborne has on its north-east side pronounced corries with small glacial lakes or tarns at their bases. Around the exposed shoreline of these lakes are ridges made up of rock debris, as though some past force, such as a glacier, moved down the side of the dome gouging out the corries and pushing before it debris behind which the lakes formed. Similar evidence of glaciers and ice domes is also to be found on the Mount Adam, Mount Robinson and Mount Maria ranges on West Falkland, while other parts of the islands appear to have experienced only a periglacial climate. In areas where the quartzites are relatively undisturbed by folding, such as the area of East Falkland, north of the Wickham Heights and the centre and south of West Falkland, a relatively small number of isolated hills rise from gently undulating plains unbroken by rocky ridges or outcrops. In the region of Port Stephens and Albemarle at the southern end of West Falkland, many of the hills are formed into almost perfect spherical shaped domes, yet in complete contrast the area is also dotted by a series of upstanding rock formations cut and sanded into amazing shapes, with descriptive names such as the Three Crows, Cauliflower Rocks and The Indian Village. Spread across the side of a gently inclined landscape to the south of Port Stephens, the latter appear as a cluster of Indian tepees. Many formations stand like narrow stacks 6—9m (20—30ft) or more in height, in parts whittled away to form narrow waists on top of which the rocks may swell out, giving the whole formation a precarious and top heavy appearance. p. 112 Ian Strange
