September 4, 1995 Monday Nitro results[edit]

The September 4, 1995 edition of Monday Nitro is the first episode of WCW's flagship televison program, WCW Monday Nitro. The episode aired live on September 4, 1995, on TNT, marking the first professional wrestling show to air on TNT. The event took place on September 4, 1995, at The Mall of America in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The event featured four professional wrestling matches. In the main event, Hulk Hogan defeated Big Bubba Rogers to retain the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. In other prominent matches, Sting faced Ric Flair in a WCW United States Heavyweight Championship match, Flyin' Brian defeated Jushin Thunder Liger, and in a dark match, The American Males (Marcus Alexander Bagwell and Scotty Riggs) defeated Bunkhouse Buck and Dick Slater.^[1] This event marked the beginning of the Monday Night Wars, which ended on March 26, 2001, when WWF bought WCW in real-life, which was also put in kayfabe storylines.

Storylines[edit]

The card consisted of four matches, including one dark match before the show aired live, that resulted from scripted storylines, where wrestlers portrayed faces, heels, or tweeners. Results were predetermined by WCW's writers. Storylines were produced on WCW's weekly television series, Thunder, Main Event and the pay-per-view event Bash at the Beach.

At Bash at the Beach, Hulk Hogan defeated Vader in a steel cage match to retain the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. It was then announced that Hogan would defend the championship against Big Bubba Rogers.

At the Great American Bash, Sting defeated Meng in a tournament to become the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship. He successfully defended the title against Meng at Bash at the Beach. It was then announced that Sting would defend the title against Ric Flair.

On September 3, 1995, Jushin Thunder Liger re-signed with World Championship Wrestling (WCW). It was then announced that he would face Flyin' Brian.

Preliminary matches[edit]

To start the event, Flyin' Brian faced Jushin Thunder Liger, in Liger's first WCW match since Starrcade (1992) in December 1992. In the closing moments, Pillman performed a tornado DDT and then transitions a standing switch into a victory roll to win the match.

After that, Sting, in an vignette, told fans he was the king of his finishing move, Scorpion Deathlock.

Next, commentator Eric Bischoff interviewed WCW World Heavyweight Champion Hulk Hogan and his manager, Jimmy Hart in front of the former's restaurant, Pastamania. Hogan tells Big Bubba Rogers that he's eaten his pasta and is ready to fight.

In the penultimate match of the night, Sting defended the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship against Ric Flair. Before the match, Lex Luger walks halfway down the aisle as Bischoff flips out (as at the time), Luger was a member of the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). In the closing moments, Flair performed Figure-Four Leglock on Sting. Flair then grabbed the ropes which led to Arn Anderson attacking him and chasing him to the locker room.

After that, an unnamed wrestler (later revealed to be Scott Norton) appeared, yelling at the commentators. He tells Bischoff he has a contract and gets in Steve McMichael's face, until Randy Savage runs out. Savage challenges him to an immediate match, but Bischoff chastises him.

Next, vignettes aired featuring Sabu, with all of his match highlights with Chris Kanyon. Then, Gene Okerlund congratulated Mike Hill of Cullman, Alabama for winning Hogan's Harley-Davison motorcycle that Hogan gave away at Clash of Champions.

Michael Wallstreet, previously known as IRS in the WWF, cut a promo and says he is in WCW because of money and power. He says the IRS will be interested in his activities as he tries to climb to the top of WCW.

Main event[edit]

In the main event, Hulk Hogan (accompanied by Jimmy Hart) defended the WCW World Heavyweight Championship against Big Bubba Rogers. In the closing moments, Hogan performed the leg drop on Rogers and pinned him to win the match and retain the championship. After the match, The Dungeon of Doom comes out to attack Hogan and he fends them off with help of Luger. Hogan and Luger stare each other down until Savage and Sting come into the ring. Okerlund moderates a confrontation between Hogan and Luger. Luger teases a heel turn, by saying he is tired of kids and says he is in WCW to get a WCW World Heavyweight Championship match. Hogan accepts the challenge. It also announced that Savage will face Scott Horton and Michael Wallstreet will face Sabu.
