SWAKOPMUND JETTY[edit]

History[edit]

Captain Curt von François founded Swakopmund’s in 1892 as the main harbour for the Imperial German colony. The purpose of the wooden Jetty was for off-loading the boats and rafts. On 25th October in 1940, the 2nd Eisenbahnbaukompagnie built the wooden jetty and only completed the 275-meter long and 9 meter wide jetty in April 1905. Working conditions were dangerous ,difficult for the engineers. However they only manage to complete 262 m at the outbreak of the Great war.Swakopmund jetty became a favourite with anglers and bristle with fishing rods.In 1983 was considered unsafe for pedestrians use.

The Official Reopening

The first section was rehabilited and re-opened in 2008, but due to a lack of funds the second section was closed to the public and left to disintegrate. This was when Swakopmund businessman Quiton Liebenberg came up with a plan to restore the second half of the jetty and to build a restaurant at the very end.

Swakopmund’s jetty was officially reopened on Friday, 30 July 2010 and repairs suppose it is safe to walk on. The "new" jetty has some new additions, such as the southern side for walking and the northern side for fishing, a second deck offering uninterrupted views over the Atlantic Ocean, and an up market seafood restaurant and oyster bar at the end of the 300-metre pier. The jetty has toilet facilities and no waste is deposited into the sea. Entrance is free. The Lighthouse Group, which developed the "new" jetty and will maintain and manage it, promised the public to provide 24-hour security. Rosina /Hoabes stated ,’’ in her speech that the town was built because of the jetty and also brought that romantic aura to Swakopmund.o”At the jetty one will find TUG RESTURANT . No visit to Swakopmund is complete without taking a walk over the ocean on a jetty with such rich history.
