COI editing[edit]

  • Hello, and thanks for bringing this to our attention. The first problem is that we can't currently use the images displayed on your website, because your company still holds the copyright. If your company would like to release those images under a free license (i.e. give permission to Wikipedia and anyone reading Wikipedia to freely use, reproduce, and modify the images provided they give credit), please follow the instructions at commons:OTRS for sending an e-mail releasing the photographs.
  • Wikipedia is freely licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 license, so we are unable to use copyrighted photos in our articles except under extenuating circumstances. In this case, since a free alternative is already available and used in the article, internal policy does not permit using outside copyrighted photos. If you would still prefer that a different image be used in the article, and are able to release it under a free license compatible with the CC-BY-SA 3.0, please follow the instructions at commons:OTRS for sending an e-mail releasing the photographs.
  • Please be aware that Wikipedia has a policy against product directories. We can include a few examples of major products a company sells, but not all of them.
  • Please feel free to ask for additional assistance at the Conflict of interest editing noticeboard or message me at User talk:Altamel.
  • Unfortunately, your proposed text is too promotional and does not adhere to Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy. Wikipedia is not a vehicle for advertising, marketing or public relations, but the purpose of your proposed text is clearly to win over prospective customers and investors. As such, it cannot be added to the article unless it is substantially rewritten.
  • The most obvious red flags are phrases that are frequently used in press releases, but are not appropriate for an encyclopedia. These promotional terms include phrases such as [...] Just as importantly, watch out for sentences that sound vaguely positive, but don't actually tell the reader anything specific. They should be condensed and written more tersely.
  • It would be best to submit your articles through Articles for Creation, a process which allows new users to work on draft articles and then submit them for review. As long as the drafts have been edited within the last six months, they will not be deleted except under severe violations of Wikipedia policy, such as a copyright infringement, which we cannot host under any circumstances. But other than that, an unfavorable review will not lead to the draft's deletion, only a request that it be improved further.
  • Edit requests are intended to work as thus: editors with a conflict of interest can propose specific edits/sentences, which are then reviewed by unbiased Wikipedia editors for neutrality, sufficient citations to reliable sources, copyright and close paraphrasing checks, and compliance with other policies. The onus is on the edit requestor to provide a workable draft. Since the edit request queue has a backlog of over 0 entries, requests that provide specific changes or additions will receive priority over general requests for updates. As you have not provided any specific sentences you wish to have added to the article, I am afraid there's not much I can currently do to help you.

  • Moreover, the structure of this piece clashes with Wikipedia's style guides. Well-written articles should be written in paragraphs of prose. They should summarize the subject, and contain a logical flow that demonstrates how each idea is related to the next. Simple chronological lists of events just don't hold together. They bounce from once idea to another without any indication of similarity, causality, or juxtaposition.
  • The problem with a lot of corporate articles is they focus only on the company's expansion, so it's just listing new acquisitions, new products, new marketing strategies in an effort to convince readers that the company is succeeding. Instead, a corporate article should tell the history of the company in a manner that's not so pointed.

Copyrights[edit]

  • Unfortunately, it is unlikely that we will be able to use that image, as it is likely copyrighted (due to legal reasons, we must assume that images on the Internet are copyrighted unless the author explicitly waives their rights). Furthermore, Wikipedia's Non-free content policy does not permit using copyrighted photos to illustrate living people, even under the fair use criteria, because if the person is still alive, it should be possible to find a non-copyrighted photo of them.
  • Hello, and thank you for your proposed changes. Unfortunately, they appear to be copied or closely paraphrased from this website [***WEBSITE***]. Wikipedia is an open-source project: we are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License, which permits our readers to reuse our text for whatever purpose they desire. As a result, copyrighted text for which we lack permission to reuse is incompatible with our free license, and cannot be included in our articles except under extremely limited circumstances as detailed in the Non-free content policy. If you or your organization holds the copyright to your proposed text and is willing to release it under a free license, it is possible to grant Wikipedia permission for reuse by following the instructions at Wikipedia:Declaration of consent for all enquiries. But the preferred solution is to simply rewrite the text in your own words, which has the added benefit of maintaining a consistent editorial tone across Wikipedia's articles.
  • Hello and thank you for your image donation! The editors of Wikipedia greatly appreciate any contributions that expand our collection of freely licensed images. However, Wikipedia policy is extremely careful with image copyrights to avoid any claims of infringement, so I must ask you for additional confirmation of your image license to Wikipedia. Because this image has already been published on ***SOURCE HERE*** with all rights reserved, you must read the instructions at commons:OTRS and send an email from a company account confirming that Wikipedia is granted the free license to use the portrait. If you don't send the email within a few days, it is possible that the image will be deleted as a precautionary measure. Edit requests[edit]

Hi [USER NAME HERE]. I handle many of Wikipedia's edit requests by anonymous editors and editors with a conflict-of-interest who are not permitted to make changes to Wikipedia articles directly. If you are confused about how to make an edit request, please feel free to ask me on my talk page.

Several editors have requested that you be more specific with your edit requests. In other words, when you make an edit request, there are three things you should provide: what is the exact wording of the sentence you want added or changed, where in the article should this change happen, and why should editors believe you? Here is an example of a good edit request. Suppose the second paragraph of an article stated:

"The region of the Solar System that extends beyond the orbit of Neptune is called the Kuiper Belt. Because the Kuiper Belt is so remote, no Kuiper Belt Object has been visited by a man-made spacecraft."

The last sentence is no longer correct. You could propose the following edit request.

"In the second paragraph of this article, after the sentence 'The region of the Solar System that extends beyond the orbit of Neptune is called the Kuiper Belt', please change the current sentence 'Because the Kuiper Belt is so remote, no Kuiper Belt Object has been visited by a man-made spacecraft' to 'New Horizons was the first artificial spacecraft to visit a Kuiper Belt Object when it flew by Pluto on July 14, 2015.[1]

This edit request tells us what should be changed, since it gives an exact sentence to replace another sentence. The edit request tells us where to make the change, since it states the location of the sentence to be changed. Finally, the edit request justifies why the edit request should be trusted, since it gives a reference to an article supporting your new sentence. Giving a reference is not always necessary if a change is plainly correct: for example, pointing out a grammatical mistake should be understood any Wikipedia volunteer. Deletions[edit]

  • If you do not believe this article should exist on Wikipedia anymore, you have two options to get it deleted.
  1. Propose the article for deletion through WP:PROD (expedited deletion). As an unregistered user, you can edit the article to include the text {{subst:proposed deletion|concern=reason for proposed deletion}} to tag the article for deletion, and the page will be removed at the end of seven days. However, anyone can object to and prevent this form of expedited deletion by removing the tag.
  2. Nominate the article for a deletion discussion. Unlike expedited deletion, nobody can unilaterally stop an Articles for Deletion discussion. Editors will debate whether to delete the article for seven days, whereupon the article will be deleted or kept, or the discussion will be extended. As an unregistered user, the system does not allow you to create new pages, so request further assistance either here or on Wikipedia talk:Articles for Deletion.
  • Hi Altamel. I have objected to the proposed deletion of INSERT PAGE NAME HERE because PROD is only supposed to be for uncontroversial deletions. Since the article author removed the PROD tag (and they are allowed to do this, see WP:DEPROD), the article cannot be proposed for deletion again. If you still feel the article should be deleted, you can nominate it at WP:AfD. Happy editing!
  • Hi Altamel. I removed your proposed deletion of the article INSERT PAGE NAME HERE because the proposed deletion tag was previously removed by a different user. Anyone can object to a proposed deletion, and once that is done, the article cannot be proposed for deletion again: see WP:DEPROD. If you would still like to have this article deleted, you can nominate it at Wikipedia:Articles for Deletion. Twinkle makes nominating articles for deletion and/or PROD very easy, you can enable this tool by going to your preferences page and clicking the gadgets tab, then select the option for Twinkle — just be sure you use the program carefully.   • Please note that a company's mere existence does not guarantee it can have a Wikipedia article: articles must meet a minimum threshold of notability to be kept. You need to find independent sources, such as newspapers, magazine articles, or reliable websites not connected to this company (i.e. press releases are not considered independent sources) that discuss the organization in detail. Just confirming the company's existence is not enough. I'm sorry if this comes across as an unfamiliar policy, but there is a rationale behind this requirement: without sufficient background information, a topic will be too obscure to be grounded in fact, and it will be extremely difficult to develop into a quality article.
  • Hi Altamel, and welcome to Wikipedia! I noticed that you have started patrolling new pages and recently tagged this article (INSERT PAGE NAME HERE) for deletion under CSD criteria INSERT CRITERIA HERE. I think it would be a good idea to reconsider that decision. After all, the page you nominated was only one minute old, and sometimes editors take a little bit of time before they finish writing. Usually, it's a good idea to wait at least 10 minutes after the latest edit on an article before CSDing it because it is too short. We don't want to discourage editors right after they post an article.
Of course, don't be discouraged by this message either. New Page Patrolling is a very important part of the encyclopedia, but it's just important that we do it carefully and correctly. Be sure to read Wikipedia:New pages patrol and this essay on why it's important to be careful with page deletions. There are many other parts of Wikipedia you can work on too, like vandalism patrol, writing new articles, and copyediting spelling and grammar mistakes. Referencing[edit]

Hi Altamel. I reverted your edits on INSERT ARTICLE NAME HERE because Wikipedia is not considered a reliable source and neither are the various websites out there that copy our content. Citing ourselves would be pointless, because we can't rely upon self-published sources like ourselves, and citing this encyclopedia to prove that this encyclopedia is accurate results in circular referencing—we need outside sources to substantiate controversial claims. Good reliable sources include newspapers, books, and scholarly articles; reliable publications have a strong level of editorial control. Thanks!

Writing articles and citing sources[edit]

One way to improve your articles is say where you got your facts from. It is important to cite your sources by giving the name of the book or website you used during your research. Typically, Wikipedia editors add a hyperlinked footnote after each sentence, like this.[1] You can create a footnote with a citation template, which is a block of wiki-markup that you can use to quickly format a citation: <ref>{{cite web | last = | first = | authorlink = | coauthors = | title = | work = | publisher =| date =| url = | format = | doi = | accessdate = 13 May 2024 }}</ref>.

Citing sources is required because it helps prove that your facts are correct. It also allows other editors to verify what you write in articles—other editors can open the sources you provided and double-check your sentences. Another benefit is that citing sources makes expanding the article in the future easier, since other editors can build off of the sources listed on the page.

Wikipedia can be a confusing place at first because there are so many rules, but most editors here are willing to provide help if you just ask for it. Possible spam[edit]

Hi Altamel. I have reverted several of your edits because they added links to commercial websites. Those edits broke two rules: (1) a webpage used as a citation must actually support the Wikipedia article text it is being used as a reference for, and (2) links to websites that exist primarily to sell a good or service may be viewed as spam. Some of your dead link replacements are okay, because they link to useful resources. But others, like your repeated addition of [WEBSITE], have no relevance to the article at hand, and should not have been added. Adding links in order to promote a business is a common behavior of individuals editing with a conflict of interest, and comes under heavy scrutiny from the Wikipedia community. For now, I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that the links to commercial websites were added accidentally. However, if you are being paid to edit Wikipedia, you must declare who is paying you, who the client is, and any other relevant role or relationship.
