Vidyabhushan Shrirashmi (11.12.1930-25.08.2016)

Vidyabhushan Shrirashmi was a writer of short stories and novels in Hindi. He also translated some English books into Hindi.

Vidyabhushan Shrirashmi was the editor of Filmi Duniya, a weekly publication from Patna. He served on the editorial teams of Dainik Vishwamitra, a Hindi Daily, and Navneet, a Hindi monthly, before joining the Publications Division of the Government of India. His real name was Vidyabhushan Varma. A CIS (now IIS - Indian Information Service) officer, he took voluntary retirement and settled in Patna in 1987. He wrote a novel based on his own life, Divyadham, which went on to win the Hindi Academi award in the late Eighties. His other novels, To Sun Lo, and Pyaasa Panchhi Khaara Pani, were well appreciated. Vidyabhushan Shrirashmi was a regular contributor to popular magazines in the Sixties and the Seventies such as Neeharika, Saptahik Hindustan, Sarita, Navneet, etc.

He served the Press Information Bureau, Directorate of Field Publicity, Doordarshan and the Border Security Force before opting for voluntary retirement as a Joint Secretary in the Information & Broadcasting Ministry, Government of India.

Vidyabhushan Shrirashmi was born on December 11, 1930 in Bihta. His mother died while he was still a child. His father, Kamta Prasad, was a follower of Arya Samaj, which believes in remarriage of widows. Vidyabhushan Shrirashmi's step mother was not kind to him, leading to his running away from home. He worked in different newspapers, and financed his education through the earnings. He completed his MA and Sahityaratna. A believer in progressive thoughts, he had an inter-state marriage with a Bengali girl, Geeta, in 1951. Geeta expired in 1986.
