Sibelius in 1913

The String Quartet in D minor, Op. 56, also known as Voces intimae, was a string quartet written by Jean Sibelius in 1908, and finished in 1909.[1] It was the fourth and final string quartet written by the composer.[2] While composing this piece, Sibelius was suffering from an undiagnosed throat condition that he believed to be cancer.[1] The quartet was composed mostly while Sibelius was in London, Paris, and Berlin.[2]

Structure[edit]

The string quartet consists of five movements.[1]

  1. Andante - Allegro molto moderato
  2. Vivace
  3. Adagio di molto
  4. Allegretto
  5. Allegro
