Cire is an American rock band founded by multi instrumentalist Eric Johanson in New Orleans, Louisana. As its main producer, singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist, Johanson is the only official member of the group and remains solely responsible for its direction. Cire’s music is a blend of hard rock and electronica with blues and jazz influence.[1]

History[edit]

Eric Johanson was born in Memphis, Tennessee and started playing guitar when he was five years old. His first release as Cire was 2001's Pleasure Is Our Enemy, a collection of tracks Johanson wrote, performed, and recorded almost entirely by himself throughout his teenage years. The record was released via Johanson’s own Genome Records. In 2003, Johanson collaborated with drummer Doug Gay to record the band’s second offering, Adrenological. The record was also issued via Genome Records and made available for purchase through the band's website. After the release of Adrenological, Gay left Cire while Johanson focused time on his solo project called Emptyself. By 2005, Johanson met drummer Chris O'Guinn. The duo spent much of the spring and summer of the year developing new Cire material while simultaneously searching for a bass player in an effort to finally perform live. The search came to an abrupt end In August of 2005 with the arrival of Hurricane Katrina. In the aftermath and subsequent flooding, Johanson lost his uninsured apartment, which housed all of his recording equipment and acted as his sole recording space. After struggling with the uncertainty of the band's future Johanson made the decision to begin anew and moved to New Zealand. Before leaving, Johanson and O’Guinn managed to record most of the material that would later become the third overall studio album titled Wholesale Buyout. The album was once again released through Genome Records and available for digital sale via Bandcamp. Since the 2006 release of Wholesale Buyout, there has been no new release announcements for Cire.[2]

Musical characteristics and lyrics[edit]

AllMusic’s Sergey Mesenov named blues artist Stevie Ray Vaughn as Johanson’s earliest role model, but commented that Cire went on to develop “melodic guitar-driven rock” influenced greatly by industrial rock sounds like Failure, Tool, and Nine inch Nails. Johanson’s lyrics “often explore philosophical and scientific worldviews stemming from his interest in evolutionary psychology, philosophy, and politics.”[3] In an interview with SoundClick, after the release of Adrenological, when asked of his influences Johanson stated simply: “Everything from Charles Darwin to Psilocybin.” [4]
