English B Internal Assessment

The International Baccalaureate (IB) program offers a variety of assessments for students, including Internal Assessments (IAs), which are pieces of coursework marked by students' teachers. The Language B Internal Assessment is an individual oral assessment that makes up 25% of a student’s grade at Standard Level. Language B is a language acquisition course designed for students with some previous experience in the target language. These languages include French, German, and Spanish (IB Guide, 2018).

IA Purpose

The Language B IA is an oral assessment consisting of a conversation with a teacher, during which the student demonstrates their ability to use the target language in various real-life situations. The student is shown two visual stimuli, each relating to a different theme from the course. Each visual stimulus must be labeled in the target language with the theme to which it relates. The student chooses one of the visual stimuli and prepares a presentation directly related to the stimulus. During this time, the student is allowed to make brief working notes (IB Guide, 2018).

Part 1: Description of the Visual Stimulus

The student describes the visual stimulus and relates it to the relevant theme and the target culture(s). This part assesses the student's ability to provide a coherent and fluent description, using appropriate vocabulary and grammatical structures (IB Guide, 2018).

Tips:

  1. Prepare Thoroughly: Familiarize yourself with the themes and cultural contexts of the course to provide relevant and insightful descriptions.
  2. Practice Vocabulary: Ensure you have a wide range of vocabulary related to the themes to describe the stimulus accurately.
  3. Use Connectors: Employ linking words and phrases to make your description coherent and structured.

Part 2: Teacher-Student Engagement on the Theme

The teacher engages the student on the theme presented in Part 1, expanding on what the student has provided in the presentation. This part assesses the student's ability to respond to questions, elaborate on ideas, and maintain a conversation in the target language (IB Guide, 2018). Tips:

  1. Anticipate Questions: Think about possible questions the teacher might ask related to your presentation and prepare responses.
  2. Elaborate on Ideas: Don't just give short answers; try to expand on your points and provide detailed explanations.
  3. Stay Calm and Focused: Listen carefully to the teacher's questions and take a moment to think before responding.

Part 3: General Discussion on Additional Themes

According to the IB guide, the Language B Internal Assessment requires students to demonstrate their ability to use the target language in real-life situations. The teacher and student have a general discussion on at least one additional theme taken from the five themes around which the course is based. This part assesses the student's ability to discuss various topics fluently and coherently.

Tips:

  1. Broaden Your Knowledge: Be familiar with all five themes of the course and have some ideas and opinions on each.
  2. Practice Speaking: Engage in regular speaking practice with classmates or native speakers to build confidence and fluency.
  3. Use Examples: Support your points with examples, whether from personal experience, current events, or cultural knowledge.
