Fernando DeOliveira[edit]

Fernando DeOliveira (September 9, 1969 – ), is an abstract expressionist currently working out of Boston, Massachusetts. However, DeOliveira was originally born and raised in Brazil, until coming to America in 2000. After years of work as an art dealer and painter, DeOliveira decided to dedicate his full attention to painting. In Boston he attendedThe School of the Museum of Fine Arts, or SMFA, in 2003 and began to participate in solo and group shows, gaining publicity, while furthering his art career. Over the course of these years, his artwork has constantly evolved, taking on new shapes and forms, primarily as abstract paintings, although he has recently also entered the world of sculpture and film. Artist Statement[edit]

The creation of my work involves a very specific technical process, which can generally be broken down into two parts. First, I create texture on the canvas. This part of the process is very intuitive and expressive. During this phase I use anything from old spoons and plastic bags to strings and palette knives to manipulate gesso and build a dynamic surface for the paint. In the second phase of the process, I bring in glazes of acrylic color to create form, and develop the composition. Because light and color are so important in my work, I use only acrylic paint and water. Other mediums tend to dilute and dull the pigments, taking away from the vibrancy of the colors. As an artist I create work that is true to myself. I do not force anything on the viewer, nor do I adhere to what others believe art should be. With honesty a true connection can be formed between viewer and artist through the simple medium of paint. My art is my way of connecting with the world. The work I create is timeless and speaks with its own language. This language is an emotional and expressive one which all people can respond to in their own individual way. The traditional abstract expressionism of my paintings is marked by a unique personal twist. Using acrylic, a contemporary material, I focus on the play of light between texture and color. Tropical, almost carnival, and simultaneously ambiguous, my painting is a celebration of life.
