The Western Gazette (London, ON)

The Western Gazette is the official student newspaper at Western University in London, Ontario, Canada. Established in the fall of 1906 as the handwritten literary journal In Cap and Gown, it later adopted the name The Gazette and has since become a prominent publication on campus [1]


History

The Western Gazette was first established in 1906 by as a platform for local journalism in the London area. Since its inception, it has played a significant role in keeping residents informed about important events and developments in the region. <'About Us' https://https://westerngazette.ca/site/about.html>.

Editors

The Gazette has 28 section editors who create the majority of the content. They are undergraduate students and receive a bi-weekly honorarium for their work. [2]


Staff

Student volunteers who produce content on a flexible schedule. Interns and volunteers who demonstrate commitment and excellence are promoted to staff. [3]


Interns The Gazette runs an internship program each semester where students can apply to be mentored by a section editor. [4]

Any student at Western University is welcome to contribute to The Gazette.

Alumni: The Gazette has produced notable journalists who have worked at major media networks including The Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, National Post, MacLean’s, CBC, CTV, Al Jazeera, Sportsnet, and The New York Times. Notable alumni include Stephen Brunt, Susan Delacourt, Kevin Donovan, Scott Feschuk, Elliotte Friedman, Kevin Newman, Carol Off, Alan Thicke, Paul Wells, and Aaron Wherry.

Special Editions[edit]

Over the 2023-2024 season, The Gazette has worked on four special editions, including Frosh, Sex Issue, Climate Change, and Homecoming.

Letter to the Editor[edit]

The Gazette encourages feedback from readers regarding issues raised in its stories, as well as viewpoints expressed by columnists and other letter writers.

Gazette Community Submission[edit]

The community section of The Gazette provides an online platform for Western students, alumni, and London residents to voice their opinions on various issues related to the university, surrounding areas, and community issues.[5]

Publications Committee[edit]

The Gazette Publications Committee is a subcommittee of the University Students' Council's Board of Directors. It guides long-term and strategic planning for The Gazette and serves in an advisory capacity for the student editorial team.

Awards Western University’s student newspaper has been nominated for 10 national journalism awards, more than any other campus publication in Canada [7]
