J.T. Lewis is an American drummer and composer. He is the co-leader of the afro-futuristic Harriet Tubman Band[1][2], featuring Melvin Gibbs (Bass) and Brandon Ross (Guitars). He has performed and recorded with over 200 artists, appearing in close to 150 music albums, that span multiple musical genres.
Career
[edit]A native New Yorker, raised in Jamaica Queens, J.T. Lewis studied with Artie Simmons and Michael Carvin, and attended CCNY as a music major. He currently lives in Bedstuy, Brooklyn.
He has performed/recorded with over 200 artists from all genres from the Jazz greats such as Stanley Turrentine, Bobbi Humphrey, Roy Ayers, Herbie Hancock, Lena Horne, and David Sanborn, to the Pop icons such as Tina Turner, Sting, Lou Reed, Marianne Faithfull, Elvis Costello, Whitney Houston, Debbie Harry, Garland Jeffreys, and Vanessa Williams, to the Jazz revolutionaries such as Don Pullen, David Murray, Henry Threadgill, Sonny Sharrock, Lawrence D. “Butch” Morris, Pete Cosey, Bill Laswell, Kip Hanrahan, Marc Ribot, Bernie Worrell, The Jazz Passengers, Joseph Bowie, Howard Johnson's Gravity, turntablist DJ Logic, and many more.
He is one of the original members of Vernon Reid’s Living Colour and was a touring member of the Joseph Bowie’s Defunkt group in the early ’80, during the downtown period in New York City.
In 1998, together with Melvin Gibbs (bass) and Brandon Ross (guitars), he co-started Harriet Tubman Band, an afro-futuristic musical collective, that has recorded five albums, and has performed live/recorded with cornet player Graham Haynes, turntablists and MCs DJ Logic and Val Jeanty, trumpeters Ron Miles and Wadada Leo Smith, and with Cassandra Wilson/Black Sun Project. The band continues to perform concerts and record, as of 2023.
In 2009, he co-led the band "SociaLybrium", which featured bassist Melvin Gibbs, the late Rock and Roll Hall of Famer keyboard player Bernie Worrell and guitarist and musical director DeWayne "Blackbyrd" McKnight, both Parliament-Funkadelic alumni. SociaLybrium’s album, For You/For Us/For All, was released by Livewired Music, in December of 2009.
He has “subbed” for the great Bernard “PRETTY” Purdie on the “GODFATHERS OF GROOVE” tour featuring Grant Green Jr (guitar) and the late Rueben Wilson (Hammond B3)
For the past 27 years he has performed and recorded with singer Vanessa Williams.
