Henry Thaddeus Stevens (1840-1913) was a mayor of Moncton, and owner of the Moncton Times.
Early years
[edit]Stevens was the publisher and proprietor of the Moncton Daily Times, later the Moncton Times. He was the MPP for Westmorland during the 27th New Brunswick Legislature. He was appointed as Chairman of Moncton in 1883, when Moncton's second Act of Incorporation was amended to change the position to that of an elected mayor. He was re-elected in 1884 and again in 1885.[4]
He married twice, the second time to Jane Caldwell.
Trial and bankruptcy
[edit]In January 1893, their adopted daughter Mabel died under suspicious circumstances. Her body was exhumed[5] and a trial was held in which his wife was convicted of manslaughter. A second trial was held and she was acquitted, following a 15 minute deliberation, on June 23, 1893.[2] As a result, he declared bankruptcy in October 1894 and sold off his home, business and possessions to pay the legal fees.
