Edmund A. Boniface, Jr. invented and patented the Cockpit Sound recorder while he was an aeronautical engineer with Lockheed California Company, a Division of Lockheed Aircraft Crop in the 1950 to 1978 era. His U.S. Patent 3,327,067 was intended to capture the SOUNDS, VOICES, MECHANICAL NOISES, EXPLOSIONS, etc that would be heard in the cockpit area of the aircraft during a catastrophic event.
