Milena Borisova Bozhikova is a Bulgarian musicologist, PhD (1990), Doctor of Sciences [Dr. Habil.] (2010), Professor (Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS), Institute for Arts Studies).

Biography[edit]

She graduated from the Specialized Music High School with a piano with honors and a medal. She then attended the National Academy of Music "Pancho Vladigerov" in Sofia with Piano under Prof. Milena Mollova and Musicology. After a competition, she entered the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory with a degree in Musicology, which she graduated with Prof. Yury Nikolaevich Kholopov with excellent results and a medal. She studied in the piano class of Dmitry Nikolayevich Sakharov, a graduate of Lev Oborin.

She comes from the family of Bozhik Atanasov, head teacher, Bulgarian revolutionary, activist of the Military Defense Forces in Drama Macedonia. Her father, Dr. Boris Bozhikov, was a graduate of medicine and a practicing physician in France, where he defended a dissertation on the surgical treatment of tuberculosis (1936).

Since 1992, Bozhikova has worked at the Institute of Art Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences successively as Assistant professor, Associate professor and Professor; defended two theses. Guest lecturer at national and foreign universities. Supervisor of doctoral students, two of whom were nominated for the Youngest Scientist award of the BAS.

She was awarded the Academic Award for Scientific Achievements of the BAS (2000), research grants from the Paul Sacher Foundation, Switzerland (2008), the Fulbright Program (2022), UBC Book of the Year awards (1999 , 2010), national and foreign publishing and festival grants.

She is the Head of scientific projects, including to the Bulgarian Scientific Research Fund; Oxford University Press/Grove music (coordinator and author of 75 articles on Bulgarian personalities), an International project between BAS and Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts, participant in projects for young scientists at the BAS, an international project at the Science Fund of the Czech Republic, in the initiatives of Towards a global history of music of the Balzan Research Project under the leadership of Prof. Reinhard Strohm (Oxford University), etc.

Bozhikova is an author of over 300 publications, including publications in Baerenreiter-Verlag, Oxford University Press, Cambridge Scholars Publishing, Peter Lang Verlag, Moscow State Conservatory Publishing, Institute of Art Studies - Moscow, Prof. Marin Drinov BAS Publishing House, Institute for Arts Research - Sofia, Revista Muzica - Romania, etc.
