Barraterre Island

coordinates 23°41'50.1"N 76°03'02.5"W

The Island is located at the most northern point of Great Exuma Island in the Bahamas.[1]

Barraterre as with all islands of The Bahamas are composed only of Limestone and not volcanic rock and is frequently worn razor sharp by the action of the wind and sea. Barraterre sits beneath whats known as the Exuma cays which are home to the Exuma cays land and sea park, Which is the first of its kind in the world. [2] The park is home to

Barraterre is the third largest cay in the exuma chain after Little Exuma, and Great Guana cay. Initially called Barrataria, the name has shifted to be known as Barraterre. The name may have come from various sources, namely a fictional island of Barrataria from the book ‘Don Quixote’, the kingdom of Barrataria from the comic opera ‘ The Gondoliers’, or the actual island located off the coast of New Orleans.

Prior to 1929, the island other than the settlement of Barraterre was divided into four tracts. It has since become under the ownership of R N Thompson, who at the time was the commissioner at Grand Bahama island.[3]
