Hello and welcome to my user page. My name is Peter Santerre.

About Me

Sailing near Seattle, WA.

I've been a user of Wikipedia for a long time, but have just recently started my journey into editing and creating content for this site. I don't have many areas of expertise, but thought I would contribute where I could to what I believe to be a very valuable resource.

I was born February 12, 1974, and spent most of my formative years in Dash Point, Washington. Here I learned my love and respect of the water, the joy of exploring and understanding the world around me, and how to try and get along with other people.

I currently reside in Southworth, Washington, but have spent time in Spokane, Washington for school, Elko, Nevada following my college girlfriend (now wife) around, and San Francisco, California for my first 'real' job.

Currently I am a Network administrator for Kitsap Regional Library. Sometimes I question my choice of careers, but I'm happy that I can work for an organization that is committed to education and knowledge.

I have a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Gonzaga University.

I live in a comfortable home (that my wife and I built ourselves) with our two children, two dogs, and one cat.

“When we built temples to view the stars, we knew about all 2000 of them.”

“If you wait until the last minute to do something, it only takes a minute to do.”

Mycology[edit]

I've always found mushrooms to be vaguely interesting, but it wasn't until a co-worker of mine walked in with a 5+ pound Porcini and said "Hey, look what I just found outside!" that I became hooked. Since that time I've been actively learning as much as I can about mycology and mushrooms. I am a member of the Kitsap Peninsula Mycological Society and have recently joined the Wikipedia Fungi Project. I'm a confident identifier of local edibles and am trying to expand my knowledge to any and all of our fungal friends.

Sailing[edit]

I've always been in love with boating and the sea, but not until recently have I taken the initiative to learn how to sail. I've spent about 2 years now with a trusty old C-Lark 14 which has most of the parts of a larger complicated boat, with a sturdy and forgiving enough character to allow me to do lots of stupid stuff. I also race occasionally on a C&C 37/40XL which is a fantastic way to learn how 'real' sailors do things.

Computers[edit]

The hobby that started with an Atari 2600 and bloomed with an Atari 1200xl and Amiga 2000 eventually led to my career in the IT world. I still occasionally play games such as Guildwars, but more and more recently the computer has become a tool to get a few things done and keep in contact with friends and associates. Maintaining the systems and network at the library as well as helping my less tech-savvy co-workers pays the bills.

Music[edit]

Of all the art forms in the world, music speaks to me the most strongly. My tastes are eclectic, but the majority of the time I find myself listening to either indie singer-songwriters like The Mountain Goats, or electronica from artists like Armin van Buuren or Jon Hopkins. I also played the clarinet and saxophone regularly while in middle and high-school.

Photography[edit]

I enjoy taking pictures, but mostly in the context of my other hobbies. Currently I own a Canon A640 that I use with a small Gorillapod for macro and low-light work. I've 'hacked' the A640 with the Canon Hack Development Kit (CHDK) so that I can shoot in RAW and run some custom scripts. Any organization and post-processing is done in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.
