The provision of culturally tailored health care can reduce disparities among patient populations and reduce problems associated with linguistic barriers. In 2005, California passed Assembly Bill 1195 that requires patient-related continuing medical education courses to incorporate cultural and linguistic competence training in order to qualify for certification credits.[1] In 2011, Health Partners Institute for Education and Research implemented the EBAN Experience™ program to reduce health disparities among minority populations, most notably East African immigrants.[2] Cultural competence is especially important in Nursing practice due to the increase health outcome of patients. Unfortunately many nurses still reflect the lack of competence when caring for diverse population. Studies suggest that the solution for increased competence when caring for patients should be addressed at the student level of nursing education. [3] Data suggests that competency is very important in different fields of nursing, such as research. An initial step for any researcher interested in conducting a study involving cultural groups is the completion of cultural competency training. [4] Another very important aspect of being culturally competent as a nurse is understanding the diversity of patients, not only based on cultural background, but also gender. Providing more resources for medical professionals to accommodate transgender patients is important is making the vulnerable population feel safe and cared for.[5]Cultural competency is also important when it comes to the mental health, not only in inpatient care settings, but also in the field, such as in military, who are especially at risk for depression and mental illnesses. [6]
