Abel Marcel Calderón Arias (born May 14, 1985) is a Cuban pianist, composer, arranger, producer, band leader and educator. He is a dynamic pianist with the ability to effortlessly blend European, American, and Cuban jazz traditions. With his deep roots in the rhythmic traditions of the Caribbean and Afro-Caribbean, as well as the Cuban creative music movement of the 50s and 70s, Abel's musical language represents continued exploration on a steady foundation. He is first and foremost an improviser and his classical background in addition to his musical heritage creates a musical dichotomy.

Early life[edit]

He began his studies in classical music as a child. ‘But when I was about 13 or 14,’ tells the pianist, ‘I started a jazz band with a group of classmates from the conservatory. From the day I discovered that I could improvise, I became infected with the improvisation virus.’

When Abel Marcel was fifteen, the annual Cuban jazz competition for young people, JoJazz, awarded him an important prize. ‘Chucho Valdés was in the jury, so I was blissfully happy.’ But fate intervened: while dragging a pipe onto a balcony, he received a shock of 13,000 volts. ‘My whole hand was ripped open, I could not move. The recovery was set to take a year and a half if I would be capable of playing ever again.’ Already six months later he was sitting behind his piano. Abel Marcel: ‘Like everything in life, something good came out of it. During the recovery period I didn’t have to go to school, which meant I could go on tour to Canada with Mayra Caridad Valdés, Chucho’s sister, and a group of amazing musicians. That was my first international experience.’

A few months later he started playing with bassist Jorge Reyes (Irakere, Arturo Sandoval), which led him to record with Changuito and José Luis Cortes. He also recorded with singers like Vania, Mayito Rivera of Los Van Van, and he joined Yuri Buenaventura’s band. With the latter he ended up in the Netherlands. He was granted a scholarship at Codarts in Rotterdam from the Huygens Scholarship Programme for two years. He studied at Codarts from 2010 until 2012 and before that, he studied in the Superior Institute of Arts from Havana, Cuba.

Later life and career[edit]

After graduating from Codarts in 2012, he was invited to teach at the University where he stayed until 2020 teaching Latin piano, history of music, transcription and coordinating the student's ensembles.

Abel Marcel has been recording dozens of albums from hip-hop to salsa, from jazz to classical and is still very active with his projects.

He performed with a diverse range of talented musicians, including Yuri Buenaventura, David Murray, Changuito, Louie Vega, Saul Williams, Nasheet Waits, Jorge Reyes, and more. He has also written music for renowned choreographers Jan Linkens and Carlos Acosta.

On stage, Abel Marcel is a charismatic figure, inspiring his fellow musicians with his dynamic playing and improvisational approach to the music – an approach full of raw emotional power and humor.
