The Charente archeological and historical Society (societé archéologique et historique de la CharenteCharente archeological Society) was founded by Eusèbe Castaigne Castaigne and his erudite friends in Angouleme in 1844 and as such is one of the oldest historical Societies. The collections have developed from the gifts of members and scholars since 1844. At first, they were housed in Angouleme courthouse (Palais de justice) then in the town-hall. At his death, Jean George George, an antique and book collector and former president bequeathed his 19th century house. Therefore, since the Second World War, the collections have been exhibited in his fine private house. The collections exhibited include archeological artifacts, lapidary remains and objects from the Prehistoric, Protohistoric, Gallo-roman, Paleo-christian, medieval, and Modern periods Religious art (sculptures, capitals from Angouleme cathedral, Romanesque sculpture, enamels) Decorative arts and craft : faience, pottery, 14th-18th century enamels; door locks; pistols; paintings; clothes, headdresses.
Paper, numismatic, sigillographic ethnological collections (they are not exhibited).
Historical societies exchange copies of their publications; so the Society offers its members an extensive range of articles published all over France and Europe. The public can also attend the monthly lectures. Every object has been filed and is fully identified.
