Television broadcasting in Namibia. While radio broadcasts started as early as in 1969 in the than South West Africa television broadcasting were introduced only in 1981. Television programming caters for the needs of the Namibian population at large although only in English, the official language. Local programming consists mostly of current affairs programs, political discussions, local music programs and talk shows while programs of an entertainment nature are foreign content like soapies, family drama series and comedies. Locally produced programs such as Green Horizons, Business Today, Know Namibia, School Grounds etc are seemingly popular although continuous research to support this notion are lacking. Adequate funding are also challenging the continuous production of these programs. Weekly program schedules were not clearly demarcating program blocks and some inconsistancy in program broadcasts were experienced. This is addressed and with new program schedules which will conform to international broadcast trends are going to be introduced as from Dec 2012 apparently. Interesting developments and improvements are also going to be introduced during Dec 2012 with Digital Terestrial Television broadcasts in Namibia by the NBC. Huge financial investments were made by the Government of the Republic of Namibia, through the line Ministry, to realize this objective which will greatly enhance radio and television broadcasts in Namibia in line with international trends. Although huge challenges are faced almost daily local programming production are continuing and are to be increased to allow for proper balance and viewer demands.
