Michael Moffett Artist Sculptor new article content ...Micheal Moffett artist sculptor born in Washington DC 1945 of Irish Catholic artist Mother and a Oklahoma born electrical engineer Father grew up with Legends of sleepy hollow in Tarrytown New York and sugar sands of siesta key Sarasota Florida . Michael Moffett joined the US Marine Corp in 1967 and served in Vietnam in 1969 as a field radio operator with the 3/7 US Marine Corp Division "it changed my life forever and it is a common thread in all my art work, combat just does that too you" quoted in an article in the Today newspaper 1981. Moffett attended Ringling school of art in Sarasota Florida in 1970 to 1972 after his honorable discharge from the Marines in 1969. While at Ringling as a student His bronze Sculpture #1 was awarded the best in show at the prestigious Sarasota art associations annual members show "It was the highlight of my academic career" Today newspaper article 1981 . The artist then moved to Canada working as a welder for International Harvester welding farm equipment for a quick buck and then returning back to cocoa beach Florida to open a bronze casting foundry and welding art studio to create his own political and social commentary in bronze and steel sculptures .And he is the creator of the World Famous /infamous androgynous "Fountainhead" a 220 lb bronze sculpture that was to be a functioning bronze drinking fountain / sculpture commission for the city of Cocoa Florida but was immediately rejected and banned as to "macabre" . The unveiling of the sculpture titled "Fountainhead" embedded the artist in a world wide controversy of what is "ART" .Moffett has exhibited his bronze sculptures in Museums and art gallery in Florida and Canada and won numerous awards and accolades and currently has shown the Fountainhead sculpture at the Albin Polasek Museum in winter park fl nd Was awarded the Best of Show at the Orlando museum of Art's 1st Thursday event and was in the Best of the Best show in June 2014 , 2015 and oct 2016 at Orlando Museum of Art .
