Wikipedia Proposal: Spike-and-Wave

The following is a proposal for a project on spike-and-wave patterns done by Mike Javorski, Tyler Popp, and Blake Pierce. Each member will be assigned specific sections from the outline. We will meet once a week, after class to discuss and review our individual additions made to the wikipedia page.

General Definition and Introduction[edit]

  • What is spike-and-wave?
    • Pictures of normal EEG and of EEG during absence seizure
  • The pattern is generally seen in which diseases?
  • Who is generally affected and what does it mean/how is it abnormal?
  • Average pattern in normal human/animals and average of those affected?

Function and Mechanisms Involved in Spike-and-Wave[edit]

  • Anatomy and function of Cerebral Cortex (Avoli article)
    • Initiates in the cortex
    • Sharpness of spike may correspond to decrease in size of the epileptogenic zone (Jaseja article)
  • Anatomy and function of Thalamus (Avoli article)
    • Still equal in importance
  • How they work together

Absence Seizures[edit]

  • Brief intro of seizures, what goes on in the brain
  • Absence seizures
    • Definition and how they are different from other seizures
    • Atypical/typical

Drug Therapies and Experiments to Remedy Spike-and-Wave [edit]

  • (AEDs) antiepileptic drugs (Ferro article)
  • Experiments done on mice
  • Valproate and Ethosuximide for the treatment of childhood absence seizures (Beydoun article)
