JINS 352 Course[edit]

JINS is section of interdisciplinary courses at Truman State University that Juniors are required to take to graduate. Part of my JINS Course "Why You're Wrong" taught by Scott Alberts involves becoming invovled in a wikipedia project.

Recently I joined the Chemistry project. My major is in Chemistry, so I feel that I can help contribute what I learn. Often I search Wikipedia for concepts or chemicals that I am unfamiliar with. When I don't find a page, I simply create one with the information I currently have on the subject.

One assignment required me to work for atleast one hour as part of this project. I have worked much longer than an hour on editing chemistry pages, but here are a couple of things I did specifically for the project.

  • In my physical chemistry course we worked with a chemical called Disperse Orange 1 during a lab on flash photolysis. I looked to Wikipedia for additional information, but a page did not exist. I created one for the chemical, using the BKCHem program to draw the trans version of the compound. I talked to my classmates who completed the lab after me, and they found the page to be of great use, even using the information for their lab reports!
  • I had an assignment in which I was to assign the point groups to various compounds. After completing the work I added the point group information to the compounds that were lacking point group symetry on Wikipedia.
  • I also created a page for the alcoholic beverage Seagram's Seven Crown whiskey. This fullfills an additional requirement of the Wikipedia assignments.
