definition[edit]

Sentient media says that animal testing in cosmetics is when the makeup industry tests their products on animals to make sure that the products are safe and their ingredients are safe too. Using animals for the testings for cosmetics is a big debate, and "despite the efforts in justifying the value of animals is conducting analyzes, this study seeks to elaborate whether or not it is rational to use animals as tests subjects in the medical and cosmetic fields". [1]

cosmetic testing[edit]

Eco Friendly Habits says that "these experiments are unreliable" and the experiments can leave the animals with injuries, makes the animals undergo a lot of pain, and affects their mental well being. The SPCA de Montreal is against cosmetic testing because the animals will be put through having to be shaved to have chemicals dropped onto their skin and it will stay there for days, they will have chemicals dropped into their eyes and will also have the chemicals stay in their eyes. Rabbits are mainly utilized for the eye tests because they don't secrete tears so they can't get it out of their eyes. The animals that survive the experiments get euthanized after the experiments. The Humane Society of the United States states that animal testing is not legally required. Cosmetic testing violates the survival of experimented animals rights. Not only are there negative impacts on animals, there is also a negative impact on the environment as well. The "disposal of hazardous waste that includes animals bodies and supplies such as syringes, caging, bedding, and needles creates pollutants and harmful substances".[2]

Testing on rabbits[edit]

Many animal protection organizations are not in favor of testing on rabbits. The Humane Society International objects to testing substances such as perfume and lotion through application to rabbits' eyes. Similarly, World of Animals Foundation objects because the Draize and eye tests requires for the rabbits to be restrained while they have substances dripped into their eyes or they will shave and scrape the rabbits skin to test the products. Understanding Animal Research states that "animal procedures involving rabbits are classified as mild" but in more severe procedures can cause a lot of problems. The more severe experiments cause the animals to not be able to do the things they do everyday, it can make the mental well being and health for the animal decline, and it will cause long-term diseases where the animals will need help with eating and drinking.

Banning testing and finding alternatives[edit]

Animals have been getting tested on for many years, the first ban of animal testing was started by the European Union in March 2013. In India there was a Prevention of Cruelty to animals act that started in 1960[3]. There have been other techniques that have been made over the years. Instead of using animals they can use dead tissue from humans or animals, computer based modeling, and chemical analytical tests[4]. There has been 28 states that have ceased animal testings after European Union[5].
