Early life

[edit]

Derek Savage has given very little information about his life before he started making movies. He was born on May 13th, 1962. Savage has stated that, as a child, he had an imaginary friend named Cool Cat, who he would later make into a children’s character. Also, at some point during the 1980s, Derek became a Playgirl magazine Model.

Children’s movies and books

[edit]

In 2010, Derek published books based off his old imaginary friend, Cool Cat. In 2012, he made a low budget short film called Cool Cat Stops Bullying (which starred Vivica A. Fox and Erik Estrada, and was based off the book of the same name). After creating two more low budget Cool Cat short films and struggling to sell them, Derek decided to combine every Cool Cat film he had previously made with about thirty minutes of new footage to create a 2015 feature length film called “Cool Cat Saves the Kids”. This film became notorious after receiving scathing reviews from YouTubers such as YourMovieSucks and IHateEverything, turning Cool Cat into an internet meme. In 2018, Derek released yet another Cool Cat film called Cool Cat Kids Superhero. This film is essentially Cool Cat Saves the Kids but with a few extra scenes added and some mistakes removed. He also created Bible Birdie, a religious children’s book about a bird who meets Jesus, and announced that he would be creating Cool Cat Stops a School Shooting, a movie in which Cool Cat teaches kids what to do in the event of a school shooting. In 2019, Derek Savage started a cannabis-themed award show called the 420 Awards. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Derek Savage announced that he would be making a coronavirus safety movie called Cool Cat Fights Coronavirus. The movie is still being produced, and Derek has stated that the ending will lead into the next Cool Cat film, Cool Cat Stops a School Shooting.

Adult movies and books

[edit]

Although he is best known for his family friendly content, Derek has also created media primarily targeting adults, such as God’s Thunder, God’s Wrath, Sweet Revenge, and the Dancer: A Male Stripper Story. He also made an informative video called Gun Self-Defense for Women, in which he teaches adult women how to defend themselves with firearms.

Controversies

[edit]

Although Derek initially welcomed criticism of his movie, in 2015 he claimed several Cool Cat reviews, most notably that of IHateEverything, for infringing his copyright. Eventually the claims expired and the videos were restored. Derek has been criticized for taking these videos down, despite them being protected by fair use. After Cool Cat Stops a School Shooting was announced, Derek started a fundraiser for the movie. When the fundraiser didn’t reach its goal, he took the money so that he could use it for Cool Cat Stranger Danger Alert and Cool Cat Cooking Tips instead. These films have since been cancelled (possibly due to backlash), and Cool Cat Stops a School Shooting is still going to be produced. However, Mumkey Jones, a popular YouTuber who was going to play the shooter, left because this incident made him believe Derek was a “con artist”. In 2019, Derek claimed an interview with Cool Cat’s actor, Jason Johnson, because it had a picture of Cool Cat in the thumbnail. In retaliation, Jason claimed a video of unused footage that Derek had posted. Eventually they both calmed down and the videos were restored.
