The Mewman Revolution, also known as the War of Earthni, the Struggle for Mewmanity, and the Mewman Shock is an extended sequence of armed conflicts in the region of Earthni, which was formerly the American West Coast and parts of the Pacific Ocean. It has been called "the defining event of modern Mewman history". It resulted in the the transformation of Mewman culture and political system. The pro-monster rights monarchist faction of the United Butterfly Front and the pro-democracy faction of the Republican Army of Mewni prevailed on the battlefield with an alliance, and drafted the present-day Constitution of Mewni, which aimed to create a modern central government while preserving the old traditions of the Kingdom of Mewni. Generals on both sides of the conflict hold political power to this day. The revolutionary conflict was primarily a civil war, but foreign powers, having important economic and strategic interests in Mewni and the Pacific, figured in the outcome of Mewni's power struggles. The United States played an especially significant role.

Pre-Cleaving[edit]

Eclipsa Butterfly initially ascended to Queen of Mewni in the year 1788. However, she was imprisoned in magic crystal for eloping with a monster and having a child with them. Conspiracy theorists argue that, at this point, Eclipsa's daughter was abandoned and replaced with a commoner in secret. If this theory is true, then every Queen after Festivia Butterfly would be illegitimate. The theory was given a large amount of legitimacy when, in mid-late 2016, Eclipsa was given the throne of Mewni on the basis of the conspiracy. The circumstances regarding this bestowal are kept secret. Some of what is known is that Moon Butterfly, the queen before the bestowal, started conspiring to reclaim the throne.

During Eclipsa's "cornonation", a coup d'etat was attempted by the Magic High Commission (The MHC Scheme was entirely separate from the Moon scheme.) Some historians argue that this was the beginning of the Mewman revolution.

Pre-Cleaving Mewman-Monster Relations[edit]

The pro-monster Eclipsa was the daughter of Solaria, the main driving force behind the Mewman Conquest of Mewni and monster extermination. In the months before her return, a Monster Civil Rights movement was forming and Eclipsa was seen as a Civil Rights icon. Her return sparked massive celebration in pro-monster circles, but it also sparked the creation of the counter movement due to anti-eclipsan propaganda espoused by the monarchy ever since her imprisonment centuries ago.

The Cleaving and Lead up to Revolution[edit]

This divide permeated Mewman society and government, resulting in a coup attempt by Mina Loveberry, a veteran of the Conquest of Mewni and avid monster extermination proponent. This coup was close to succeeding, with much of the royal family fleeing the Castle of Mewni. However, Star Butterfly opted to use the Whispering spell in order to destroy all Magic and thus destroy Mina’s Magic troops. This act indirectly resulted in the Cleaving of Earth and Mewni.

Post Cleaving Cultural Shift[edit]

In the days after the Cleaving, Mewmans began separating themselves into two distinct political affiliations: “Old Butterfly,” which was against Moon, supported Eclipsa’s claim to the Mewman throne, and was pro monster rights. And “New Butterfly,” which was against Eclipsa, supported Moon’s claim to the Mewman throne, and was anti monster rights. This was likely a result of culture shock from America’s two party system. Most Mewmans were, surprisingly, pro Moon and pro monster rights. However, the adoption of the two party system had Mewmans pick which one they valued most and commiting to it. Star Butterfly laments this fact, stating “if we didn’t cleave ourselves apart with this stuff [party affiliations], we might’ve avoided this whole mess [The Mewman Revolution].”

Reforms Under Eclipsa[edit]

Following the Cleaving, the Eclipsa government made reforms to centralize the government and modernize the Kingdom. This was to be achieved by forceful industrialization, taking peasants out of the hands of the landowners and employing them in city factories. However, there was resistance from both royal landowners and farmer peasants. Landowners did not want to be weakened and farmers did not want to be removed from their ancestral lands. Peasant resistance was especially radical with Mewman corn farmers. This resistance pushed both rich and poor rural Mewmans to go “New Butterfly,” and in turn made urban Mewmans (who had not been forced there) to become to affiliate with “Old Butterfly.”

Intra-Millitary Rivalry[edit]

Much of the old Mewman guard was deeply New Butterfly affiliated. Thus, the two most high profile knights of the old guard, Lady Whosits and Sir Stabby, began conspiring with Moon Butterfly against Eclipsa. Eclipsa responded by conscripting a large amount of Old Butterfly Mewmans in an attempt to flood the army and drown out the old guard’s opinions. However, this only caused a rift to form within the Mewman army. Conflict between the old and the new groups would range from petty acts such as eating each other’s lunches from the break room fridge, to infrastructural sabotage and high profile assassination. The old and the new groups would later become the basis for the Professional Army of Mewni and the New Mewman Army.

Post-Cleaving Mewman-Monster relations[edit]

Despite being under the reign of monster rights proponent Eclipsa and her monster husband King Globgor, inter-species relations grew more tense. A main driving force in anti-monster sentiment was the neo-Solarian Mina Loveberry who, despite being wanted by the Eclipsan government, managed to spread anti-monster sentiment via social media while evading capture. Most notable is her presence on Musical.ly and later TikTok, with 336k followers as of the time of her death. Her second largest site was Youtube with a total of 114k subscribers. However, it should be noted that she primarily used her YouTube channel to post gaming lets plays. It is also alleged that she was an avid user of 4chan.

During this time, Mewman civilian attacks on monsters grew more frequent and more violent in nature. This resulted in the formation of the Order of Monsters, which was initially a self defense group to protect Monsters from Mewman attack. They would only evolve into a partisan group during the Revolution.

First Half of the Mewman Revolution: 2017-2020[edit]

On July 10th, 2017, a New Butterfly protest was held in Butterfly Square. A group of Old Butterfly protestors reacted with a counter protest. The protests turned into a riot once Eclipsan police got involved and brutally suppressed both sides. Misinformation was spread on social media that the police were only suppressing the New Butterfly side, and many American politicians denounced Eclipsa on Twitter. This was seen as an the United States endorsing Moon Butterfly and her claim to the throne by much of the Mewman populace, who were still adjusting to social media and America’s political system. On July 13th, 2017, Moon Butterfly along with a detachment of troops from the military old guard marched on Butterfly castle and demanded that Eclipsa return the crown and royal wand. Eclipsa responded by sending her husband Globgor out to negotiate peace. The Old Guard, being incredibly anti-monster, immediately ordered a volley of arrows to fire at him. This severely injured Globgor, but he made it back to the safety of the castle. Eclipsa, furious, ordered the New guard to go out and attack Moon and the Old guard. This event is seen by many historians as the official start of the Mewman Revolution.

Royal Affiliations[edit]

The following are the party affiliations that high profile royal family members took and thus sided with in the first half of the revolution:

Old Butterfly New Butterfly Neutral
Star Butterfly River Butterfly King Pigeon (The Pigeon Kingom was De facto independent during this time)
Wrathmelior Lucitor Tom Lucitor
Dave Lucitor King Ponyhead
Princess Ponyhead King Spiderbite
Queen Spiderbite

Military Operations and Early Politicization of the New Mewman Army[edit]

Both sides had two main army groups: one to fight in the Siege for Butterfly Castle, and one to attack the enemy elsewhere. The independent armies engaged each other at Spiderbite mountain and the outskirts of Los Angeles, keeping at equal strength throughout the summer season.

Fighting died down during the winter. The New Mewman Army was given power to run certain governmental things on their own as the administration was engaged in foreign diplomacy. The army took advantage of this opportunity and implanted itself in various government positions. When the warmer seasons came around the fighting flared up again, and this cycle continued until the Los Angeles Conference.

Soldiers of our Saviors Solaria[edit]

The Soldiers of our Saviors Solaria, often abbreviated to the SSS, was a paramilitary force initially made up of mercenaries organized by Mina Loveberry. The group of about 160 soldiers engaged in policing actions in the Mewman country side in the early weeks of the war. As the war went on, more and more of the organization would be comprised of Volunteers, reaching 2,100 members by the end of the first half of the war and with 3,800 members as of November 2022. The Organization grew more radical and violent, with mass executions of Monster villages being carried out. The SSS flaunted these executions, often posting videos of themselves dancing in front of mass graves on TikTok.

The Mina Butterfly declared that they were "...allies of Moon and the Professional Army." While the Professional Army welcomed the SSS, Moon Butterfly herself was reluctant to work with Mina and often rejected her pleas to "Hang out."

Order of Monsters[edit]

Around Fall, the Order of Monsters began to sabotage infrastructure and supply lines within revolutionary territory. They played an especially vital role in the siege of Butterfly Castle, performing guerrilla warfare against Professional Army troops. Most famous of these guerrilla fighters is the Ghost of Mewni, a sniper with an alleged 113 kills. It is difficult to ascertain whether or not this kill count is accurate, or if the Ghost of Mewni is even real.

The Order of Monsters had not officially sided with Eclipsa during this time, it’s leaders saying “we monsters have been under Mewmans for too long. The only way to ensure our safety is self governance.” It is worth noting that while this stance was seen as radical by many non-member monsters, it's popularity grew due to the actions of the SSS.

Foreign Involvement[edit]

The United States government immediately supported the revolutionary side with troops and supplies, with the former president Trump stating "We Americans have a duty to depose that Monarch Eclipsa." and, while giving a speech, saying "The Mewmans, they're wonderful people. Really, the best. I should know, I know the Mewmans better than anyone. We're bringing democracy to them." However, a large anti-war movement formed following the death of a group of American citizens on the outskirts of Los Angeles.

China gave support to the Counter-revolutionary side with supplies and assistance with industrial development. In exchange, Chinese transport had free passage through the lands of Mewni until reaching the United States of America.

The European Union supported the revolutionary side after extensive talks in the winter season of each year.

Mid-war Peace[edit]

Los Angeles Conference[edit]

On October 20th, 2020, a conference was held between the Revolutionary and Counter-revolutionary side. Although primarily a discussion between the Monarchist sides, there was also some discussion between pro/anti monster rights representatives (There were no representatives of the SSS present.) The New Mewman Army even had a separate representative. The conference was the first time many royal members saw each other since the war broke out, and it's reported that the conference was one of the reasons that so many royals defected in the following months. The outcome of the conference was a 6 months ceasefire that would last from October 2020 to March 2021

Faction Infighting[edit]

During the ceasefire, infighting within each faction grew intense. While there were always ideological conflict throughout the war, the ceasefire removed the danger of a common enemy distracting each faction. Political analysts also argue that the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the pressures that each faction was facing. Revolutionary infighting was over Monsters, Moon loyalists and Moon herself believed that radical anti-monster policies had alienated them from many pro monster rights Mewmans. The Professional Army and the SSS meanwhile were steadfast in their anti-monster policies.

Counter-Revolutionary infighting was between the Eclipsa Government and the New Mewman Army, which had grown powerful in the realm of politics. Marco Diaz, a powerful commander in the New Mewman Army and defector from the Professional Army of Mewni, was an Earth native and a proponent of Democracy.
