Mrs. Aisha Muhammadu Buhari (born February 17,1971) is the Wife of the President of Nigeria. Her husband, President Muhammadu Buhari is the current President and Nigeria’s 14th Head of State who was elected at the Nigerian general elections held on March 28, 2015. She hails from Adamawa State, North-East Region of Nigeria. Her grandfather, Alhaji Muhammadu Ribadu, was Nigeria’s first Minister of Defence.

She is a graduate of the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma and the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) Kaduna. Aisha Buhari is also an entrepreneur. She is the founder and managing director of Hanzy Beauty Institute.

In 2003,2007 and 2015, Aisha Buhari helped campaign for her husband’s presidential bid and hosted fundraising dinners to generate campaign funds.

Her twenty-five years marriage to the former Head of State is blessed with five children and a granddaughter.

Early Life and Origin[edit]

Aisha Muhammadu Buhari was born as Aisha Halilu on Feburary 17, 1971 in Adamawa State, North East Nigeria.Her Father was a civil engineer and her Grandfather, Alhaji Mohammed Ribadu was the first Minister of Defence in Nigeria. On her mother side she is descended from the great Ankali family renowned farmers and textile giants. Aisha Buhari went to primary and secondary school in Adamawa where she lived with siblings, her nieces and nephews. She comes from a family of academics with several paternal and maternal uncles who were Professors at different universities around the country.

Aisha Buhari attended Dowa Primary School, Adamawa girls Islamic school and Tetere Girls college before she was admitted to study at Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma where she graduated in 1999/2006 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Public Administration. She participated in projects geared at empowering young women in vocations such as tailoring/fashion, hair & make up so as to help them become independent and self reliant. Her overwhelming passion for beauty and fashion motivated her to specialize in Permanent Make-up, Mesotherapy and Miocro-dermabrasion at the prestigious Carlton Institute of Beauty Therapy, Windsor, United Kingdom obtaining a Diploma in Beauty Therapy. She also attended the exclusive French Beauty School Esthetique Academie based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and obtained a certificate in Japanese beauty techniques. She also attended the Nigeria Defense Academy NDA (Kaduna)where she obtained a Masters degree in International Affairs and Strategic Studies. Aisha Buhari is the 3rd First Lady with a postgraduate degree.She is currently undertaking a Counseling Course on Co-Dependency in the United Kingdom.

Aisha married her husband Muhammadu Buhari in 1990. They have 5 children and a grandchild.

Career[edit]

Aisha is the Founder/Managing Director of Hanzy Spa and Principal of Hanzy Beauty Institute, Kaduna and Abuja; a beauty and vocational training centre registered by the Ministry of Education and accredited by the National Board for Technical Education NBTE with a focus on empowering the future potential in the untapped wealth of the emerging beauty industry. She is also a Resource Person to National Board Technical Education (NBTE) on Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology and has participated in the curriculum development of Small Medium Enterprises for NBTE.

She has been a vibrant advocate for Women and Girl-child education having come from an area that is educationally disadvantaged for the female gender. Her life philosophy is “if the environment is safe, if there is no corruption in governance and public life, there would be enough resources in any nation to meet the important needs of the common people including those of women and the youth”. In her almost fifteen years in the beauty industry, Aisha Muhammadu Buhari has trained, mentored and empowered hundreds of Nigerian women and youth.

Political Campaigns[edit]

Aisha Buhari was a staunch supporter and campaigner during her husband’s political campaign for the presidency. In 2003, three months after her husband declared his presidential candidacy; Aisha reduced her professional responsibilities by 70 percent to support his presidential campaign. Early in the campaign, she had limited involvement but by 2007 through to 2015, her participation had increased significantly. She was hosting fundraising dinners to generate funds for his campaigns and attending political events.
