A.D. Carregado participated in the 2009–10 Liga de Honra with a squad comprised mostly of semi-professionals and no player earning more than €700 per month.[1]

In July 2012 the minimum wage in the second tier Segunda Liga was cut from €1455 to €848.75 per month. Players from 18 to 23 years old had a monthly minimum wage of €485. The rules applied to the 2012–13 and 2013–14 seasons.[2]

The average monthly wage for players in the 2017–18 LigaPro was €1000 per month, just above the collective bargaining agreement minimum wage of €974.75 (150% of the €649.83 national minimum wage).[3]

In February 2020 the second tier clubs signed a "memorandum of understanding" against perceived attempts to reduce their subsidy from the sports betting industry and undermine their professional status: "There are some attempts, even if not direct, to be able to condition the Liga Pro so that it ceases to be a professional League and becomes semi-professional, and we are against it, obviously."[4]
