Fair Witness[edit]

Fair Witness is a fictional profession invented for the novel Stranger in a Strange Land. A Fair Witness is an individual trained to observe events and report exactly what he or she sees and hears, making no extrapolations or assumptions. An eidetic memory is a prerequisite for the job, although this may be attainable with suitable training.

In Heinlein's society, a Fair Witness is a highly reputable source of information. By custom, a Fair Witness, acting professionally (generally wearing distinctive white robes), is never addressed directly and is never acknowledged by anyone present.

Fair Witnesses are prohibited from drawing conclusions about what they observe. As a demonstration, a characer in the novel is asked to describe the color of a house in the distance. Response:"It is white on this side" explaining no assumption can be made about the color of the other sides of the house without being able to see them. Furthermore, after observing another side of the house a Fair Witness would not then assume that any previously seen side was still the same color as last reported, even if only minutes before.

He is a long serving member at Wikipedia:WikiProject Schools and was a major participant at the creation of Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention. I often see him around Wikipedia, making helpful edits at school articles (with more experience on US school articles than probably any other WP editor) or reporting problems with new pages. I always get a chuckle out of his clever name - combining Idaho and Oregon. One of WP's most active editors (#617 on the list of Wikipedians by number of edits), John has had many years of high quality contributions, with varied interests and pursuits. His diplomatic ability has been honed on the talk pages of hundreds of articles, and in pursuit of creating a healthy workplace for fellow editors. Chronology of the Netherlands[edit]

Habsburg Netherlands is the collective name of Holy Roman Empire fiefs in the Low Countries held by the House of Habsburg. The rule began in 1482, when after the death of the Valois-Burgundy duke Charles the Bold the Burgundian Netherlands fell to the Habsburg dynasty by the marriage of Charles's daughter Mary of Burgundy to Archduke Maximilian I of Austria. Then known as Seventeen Provinces, they were held by Habsburg Spain from 1556, and are therefore also known as the Spanish Netherlands from that time on. In 1581, the Seven United Provinces seceded to form the Dutch Republic; the remaining Spanish Southern Netherlands eventually passed on to Habsburg Austria. Finally the Austrian Netherlands were annexed by the French First Republic in 1795.
The Southern Netherlands, also called the Catholic Netherlands, were the part of the Low Countries controlled by Spain (1556–1714 aka Spanish Netherlands), later Austria (1714–94 aka Austrian Netherlands), and annexed by France (1794–1815 aka the French period). In 1815 it was reunited with the Dutch provinces to form the United Kingdom of the Netherlands, and then became the independent country of Belgium in 1830 Belgian Revolution.
