My contributions to Wikipedia[edit]

This page and its sub-pages hold several tables that I use to keep track of my contributions to Wikipedia. I know I can do that using Wikipedia's own contributions list. But this way I have the information in one place, organized in a more convenient fashion. Also, it's a worthwhile redundancy, and I am a great believer in redundancy.

The downside is that these tables are already rather unwieldy, and may grow too unwieldy to maintain. (In some sense, I hope they do so.) If that happens, I'll pare them down. But, for the nonce, I'll keep them here as a ready reference.

All these tables are sorted in ascending alphanumerical order on the first colum, reading left to right for significant words. Thus, to use people as an example, X Brands would come after Albert Einstein, because of their respective first names (or initials). However, words like "An" and "the" are not counted, so titles of movies, songs and books will be sorted in the normal fashion.

Color keys[edit]

I've arbitrarily chosen some colors for the tables to set the different categories of contribution apart. This table and notes explain the scheme.

Color keys:
New Article
Major edit
Minor edit
Pending edit
Fair Image
Nope Image
Orig Image
Pend Image
Perm Image
Qual Image
Repl Image

The colors shown at right represent the following categories:

  • New article is one I created "from the link up" — that is, by using Wikipedia's "Create this page" function.
  • Major edit is an existing page which I revised extensively, up to and including 100%. (There were such cases where I replaced the entire text of an article. There was nothing wrong with the articles; it was just easier to do it that way, once I determined that I wouldn't lose any information.)
  • Minor edit will usually be cleanups (fixing typos, clarifying wording, etc.) or small additions (a few links, a bit of trivia). Note that the distincion between major and minor is a vague one, and has nothing to do with whether I checked the "Minor edit" box.
  • Pending edit is a case of informal collaboration where I'm awaiting feedback on proposed changes. (I don't rule out formal collaboration such as a Wikiproject in the future, but I'm in none at present.)
  • Fair Image comes from the Web or another electronic source. If it is copyrighted, I assume that some form of fair use applies, hence the name.
  • Nope Image is a copyrighted image for which permission has been denied.
  • Orig Image is one I created myself and licensed to Wikipedia. There are none such at present.
  • Pend Image is a copyrighted image for which I am awaiting permission, or have yet to request it.
  • Perm Image is a copyrighted image for which I have obtained permission.
  • Qual Image means that I copied a poor-quality image from Wikipedia, made adjustments, and replaced the old version. I first did this with the "Commander Adama" picture from Lorne Greene's page. The original was way too dark.
  • Repl Image means I decided I had a better image to illustrate some point in an article and replaced the old image with a different one. Almost certainly I'll be doing this only for my own articles. Replacing someone else's image this way would call for discussion beforehand.

Articles created[edit]

The next table shows articles I created where no article had been before. (I did it boldly. <G>)

Articles edited[edit]

The tables linked below show the articles I have edited (104 to date.) "%" is the estimated fraction of the article I've edited — a dubious metric, but better than nothing. If this number is 10 percent or greater, I call it a major edit. IMGs is the number of images I contributed — not the total number in the article.

In partial compensation for its length, I've split the "Edits" table into three parts and put each portion on its own page. The links are:

–I like all the stuff you did but dont you think it maybe could use a little more creativity?Elayna928 19:22, 2 November 2006 (UTC)elayna—

  • I missed the comment due to a period of inactivity. Elayna928, if you should happen to browse this page again, my answer is no: I don't think Wikipedia is the place for creative writing. And besides, I have my own Web site for that.
