Special Needs are children with conditions and diagnoses that include serious medical conditions; emotional and behavioral disorders; history of abuse or neglect; medical or genetic risk due to familial mental illness or parental substance abuse.

Benefits of socializing Special Needs Children[edit]

The socializing of special needs children is vital to their development. Social skills are very much necessary with special needs children yet so often they are ignored and made to feel unwanted in the manner that has the child retreating. Children, even special needs children are vulnerable. A happy child is child who will take to socializing easier. For this to happen socializing must start at home. Ensure your child gets much love and acknowledgment from you and family. Praise them frequently. You will have greater results if you do.

Activities to Help the Socialization Process[edit]

The best why to show a child, even special needs children to make friends and proper social skills is to lead by example. If you are courteous, chances are your child will be also. Encourage your child to make friends from an early age. Even if your child is handicapped, let them have a sleep over. Take your child to parks, swimming pools, anywhere there are many people interacting with others. Your child will observe the correct behavior. Sometimes children with special needs have been wounded in the social arena. This means it may take some gentle nudging to encourage socialization. One suggestion for helping a child build social skills is to role-play. A parent or a teacher may introduce a social situation and take the role of the child, demonstrating how to respond in an appropriate manner. When a child sees and hears a good response, he or she is more apt to be able to repeat the behavior in a similar situation. Another suggestion is pair the child with much younger children who will look up to him or her as a role model. This will build self-confidence. In addition, sometimes as a parent or teacher, intervention is necessary. Placing the child with students, who are welcoming or sensitive, may make all the difference in the world.
