"To Be Human" is a song recorded and written by Welsh singer-songwriter Marina from her fourth studio album, Love + Fear (2019). The song was produced by Joel Little and released as the album's fourth single on 8 April 2019 by Atlantic Records.

Background and release[edit]

Via Twitter in 2018, Marina revealed that she would be dropping "and the Diamonds" from her stage name in order to release music as just Marina (stylised in all caps). The change occurred before the release of her fourth studio album, and she reasoned that, "It took me well over a year to figure out that a lot of my identity was tied up in who I was as an artist... and there wasn't much left of who I was."[1] Following the announcement, Marina released her first single under her new name, "Baby" with Clean Bandit and Luis Fonsi.[2]

On 14 February 2019, Marina announced Love + Fear, the name of her fourth studio album and her first album as Marina.[3] The track listing for the project was revealed the same day, with "To Be Human" listed as the seventh track.[4] Love + Fear serves as a double album that is composed of two 8-track segments, with each one exploring psychologist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross' claim that humans are only capable of experiencing the aforementioned two emotions.[5] "To Be Human" appears on the Love portion of the album, devoted to lyrics detailing positive thoughts and emotions, because it was described as a ballad about social issues.[6][7] The song was solely written by Marina and produced by New Zealand musician Joel Little. She recorded her vocals for the track at Little's Golden Age recording studios in Los Angeles.[8]

Alongside the song's release, Marina released a custom "To Be Human" t-shirt featuring a handwritten caption and an original watercolour painting, created by Marina herself; the shirt was paired with the parent album on CD and a digital version of Love as part of an album bundle.[9]

Composition and lyrics[edit]

Critical reception[edit]

Chloe Gilke from Uproxx acclaimed the song, calling it "one of the record's best tracks" and cited it as evidence that Marina did not lose "her contemplative, honest songwriting style".[10]
